You can't blend in when you were born to stand out.

Wonder by R.J. Palacio

In this WebQuest you will explore the background to the novel Wonder. You will complete tasks that will ask you to think about things through other people's perspectives. You will complete these tasks as individuals.

As you move through this WebQuest, I would like you to think about-

What do you think of Auggie at the start of the text? How do you picture him?

How does your perspective change as you read more about Auggie?

How do the other narrators' perspectives change how you feel about both Auggie and the other characters?

Why is it important to be able to see things from other people's points of view?

Instructions:

  • Complete all the tasks in order
  • Make sure each task is finished before you move on to the next one
  • If you need help, ask!
  • Try your hardest

Task 1

Meet R.J. Palacio

Read-

http://www.npr.org/2013/09/12/221005752/how-one-unkind-moment-gave-way-to-wonder

Read the interview with R.J. Palacio. She talks about what inspired her to write Wonder. You then need to answer the following question-

How did seeing the little girl outside the ice-cream shop inspire R.J. Palacio to write Wonder?

Task 2

Meet Nathaniel

Go to

https://parade.com/337452/jerylbrunner/read-this-unforgettable-letter-from-a-boy-with-treacher-collins-syndrome/2/

There you will read a letter from Nathaniel Newman to his new classmates. Nathaniel Newman, like Auggie, has Treacher Collins Syndrome. He decided to introduce himself to his class before he met them. Answer the following question-

What does it say about our society that Nathaniel felt he needed to write a letter?

(Hint- think about what we value, about what we judge people on when we meet them, about whether we judge people on what they look like or what they are like as people.)

Watch-

(you will need your headphones again)

All of these children have a craniofacial difference (meaning their heads and faces have formed differently to other people). They talk about how the camp makes them feel like they are not alone. They feel safe. People don't tease or stare at them.

You need to answer the following questions-

How did it make you feel when the children were talking about being teased and bullied?

Will it change the way you treat other people?

Task 3

At the start of Auggie's chapter, there are some song lyrics from the song Wonder by Natalie Merchant.

Watch-

Read the song lyrics here-

http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/nataliemerchant/wonder.html

In the song, Natalie sings about a child being born and all the doctors travelling to see this baby. Although she doesn't describe the baby girl, the song suggests she is different. Natalie sings that this little baby is "one of the wonders".

Answer the following question-

Why did R.J. Palacio choose these song lyrics for the start of Auggie's section of the book?

Why did she call her book 'Wonder'?

It is important to see things from other people's points of view.

Do you agree or disagree?

Your final task is to write a persuasive text/exposition (using Word) explaining why you agree or disagree with that statement.

Remember, when you are writing your persuasive text you need-

  • An introduction which will state your position
  • At least three arguments with evidence and examples
  • Each argument needs its own paragraph
  • A conclusion that sums up your arguments

Your exposition will be assessed on the criteria in the rubric you will find here-
