Yard Sale Extravaganza

Introduction

 

Today we are going to expand our money knowledge! In the book we read, Yard Sale by James Stevenson, we heard about a group of animals who decided to sell their possessions. The animals struggled to sell their favorite things. Do you think you could sell you favorite things? 

Task

You have several jobs to complete today. In completing the tasks you will have several skills added to your math toolbox. 

Your learning objectives: 

  • I can identify coins correctly.
  • I can identify a coins value correctly.
  • I can correctly add coins of same and different value. 
  • I can make change. 
  • I can use PowerPoint to create a presentation.

 

Process

In order to meet the learning objectives you will complete the following tasks:

  1. Listen to the story Yard Sale by James Stevenson.
  2. Create a list of five of your favorite items to sell. 
  3. Complete the activity: Math Café
    1. Print the worksheet.
    2. Solve the problems.
  4. Complete the activity: Making Change
    1. Print the worksheet.
    2. Solve the problems.
  5. Complete the activity: Interactive Math
    1. Enter 5 for the number of questions.
    2. Select 0.25 for the highest denomination.
    3. Enter your answers in the box for each question. 
    4. Submit your answers.
    5. Print your results.
  6. Draw your items using crayons, markers, or colored pencils. Make sure you have a price tag for each item. 
  7. Create a PowerPoint of your yard sale items. You will create one page for each item where you describe what you are selling. Use the rubric to make sure you have all important information. 
  8. In your group see if you can sell your items. Make change for your peers from the money they have. Refer to the rubric for your responsibilities in your group.
  9. Print out the evaluation page and grade yourself. How do you think you did?

Now that you have completed the Yard Sale Extravaganza you have gained a better understanding of money. You have also seen how we use money in the world around us to buy and sell items.
