World War II

Introduction

As we have been learning in our reading World War II began in 1939. The United States entered in War in 1941 after the attack on Pearl Harbor. as we have learned the US entered the War as it had just gone through the Great Depression. The war had an effect on American's lives. 

Task

Students, 
We have been learning about the Great Depression and WWII these past few days. You will be learning about the role of Arizona in WWII and how the Great Depression effected Arizona Residents. 

Process

Day One: Pearl Harbor Attack December 7, 1941

Materials:

computer, notebook paper,

Write a summary about what you read. The summary must be at least 8 sentences.

Day Two: The US enters the war

Vocabulary:

Infamy, Emperor, attack, torpedoed

Materials: 

Computer, notebook, headphones

Activities:

Listen to the speech President Roosevelt gave following the Pearl Harbor Attacks on Dec, 7, 1941

Pretend you lived during this time in History what would you have asked President Roosevelt after hearing his speech?  A minimum of 6 questions

Day Three: Interment camps

Vocabulary words: Internment camps, relocation, executive order, 

Materials:

Activity

You will be divided into a group of 3 together read two different articles "War relocation Authority Camps in Arizona 1942-1946" and "Interment History"

as a group write down important facts gathered from the two articles

Day Four: Group power point

Materials: 

computer, power point, Arizona social studies text book

Activity:

Working along with your group from day 3 create a power point 4 to 6 slides about the interment camps in Arizona. To create the power point you will use the facts from yesterdays articles and the class text book.

Your power point will included :What were Interment camps? Why were they created?, Who was relocated to the camps? Which Interment Camps were found in AZ and where were they?

Day Five: Group power point

Materials: computer

You will finish your group power point and review information used. 

Evaluation

Students will create a power point as a group " Interment camps in Arizona"

answering the following questions:

What were Interment camps?

Why were they created?,

Who was relocated to the camps?

Which Interment Camps were found in AZ and where were they?

Conclusion

You have learned about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 and how that event led to the US entering WWII. The lives of American's changed as the country went to war. Over the next few weeks will continue learning about the impact this had on families and Arizona. During this week you learned about the Interment camps that were created and the ones found In Arizona. You have created a power point about Why the interment camps were created and who was relocated to them. In your journals take time to write a summary about what you have learned.
