Introduction:
This web Quest is designed to teach
students about the five senses through the exploration of the internet.
Learners:
This Web Quest is designed to be used in a grade one class
with students performing at the Beginning, Developing and Proficency level within the GOILP. It teaches students about the five senses but it also allows
students to work in their groups, write, be artistic, and improving speaking
skills. At the end of the Web Quest the class will vote on which sense
they believe is the best. This data can easily be used in the creating of
a pictograph to incorporate mathematics and language arts into the lesson.
Considering the that all students learn differently and this will be evident in their reading and performance level inside the classroom, it is important to be sure the
students have an understanding of what the five senses are at the completion
this Web Quest.
Other
Process: To begin the Web Quest split the students into five groups, each group select one sense organ.
* Since there is going to be reading involved, make sure to include at least one average or above average reader in each group to help guide the non or below average readers along.
Once the students are in their groups at a computer they begin the Web Quest.
*Hand-out "Five Senses Web Quest" (just a simply piece of paper they use to record their findings on in complete sentences).
*Once a group have completed the Web Quest they will present their finding to the class.
*After each group, and each student in each group, have presented the class vote on which group they really think did the best.
* After the students have voted end the lesson by reminding them that although one sense might have won the vote for best group it is a personal opinion and each and every sense is extremely important.
Have students engage in answering questions provided.
Resources:
In order to complete the Web Quest you will need:
*Five computers/laptops with internet access (one for each group)
*Paper and pencils (to record findings)
*Five packs of play dough (for students to create a model of their sense)
Modeling:
*The teacher will share their favorite place to visit with the students and describe what they see, hear, taste, touch, and smell (this relates back to the anticipatory set - activity that started the lesson). The students will remember and relate their favorite place to the teacher's place. The teacher will ask the students to think about their favorite place again and share some of their experiences with their senses at this place with their friend/s sitting next to them.
Checking for Understanding:
*The teacher will ask the students the following questions:
- What are the five senses?
- What are some examples of things in your lives that your senses help you with or to experience?
- How are human being similar to one another in respect to their senses?
