the World Hunger Day

Introduction

Welcome to the "World Hunger Day" WebQuest!

Every year, on May 28th, we observe World Hunger Day to raise awareness about the global issue of hunger and food insecurity. Hunger affects millions of people around the world and it’s essential that we understand its causes and work together toward solutions. The official theme for World Hunger Day 2025 (May 28, 2025) is “Sowing Resilience”, emphasizing how strengthening climate‑resilient agriculture and empowering farmers can help secure food systems for vulnerable communities worldwide.

Task

Through this WebQuest students will:

  • Investigate the annual theme “Sowing Resilience” of World Hunger Day 2025, to realize how climate-resilient agriculture and farmer empowerment contribute to global food security.

  • Analyze the root causes of hunger using reliable sources.

  • Propose and justify sustainable, evidence-based solutions that address hunger.

Process

Step 1: Explore the World Hunger Day 2025 theme

Explore the 2025 theme “Sowing Resilience” focusing on how climate-resilient agriculture and empowered farmers can strengthen food security.

Step 2: Research the Causes of Hunger

Gather information on the main factors that contribute to hunger, such as climate change, poverty and inequality, lack of farming resources, fragile food systems etc. Use reliable websites such as FAO, UNICEF or environmental and agricultural organizations.

Step 3: Explore Sustainable Solutions

Research for effective, long-term solutions that help reduce hunger  such as climate-resilient crops, sustainable farming practices, farmer training and support etc.Choose the solutions you find most impactful or inspiring.

Step 4: Share your Contribution

Prepare a short post that includes a sustainable solution to hunger with a short justification of why these solutions matter for “Sowing Resilience”. Share it on the Padlet  https://padlet.com/meddiet4health/28-5-celebrating-the-world-hunger-day-insgev85cpiuaetu

Read your classmates’ posts and leave one supportive comment or question to contribute to the discussion.

Evaluation

Your work will be evaluated according to this rubric's critera:

Criteria 5 - Excellent 4 - Proficient 3 - Satisfactory 2 - Needs Improvement 1 - Inadequate
Step 1: Understanding the 2025 Theme Thoroughly explores the theme "Sowing Resilience" with clear explanation of climate-resilient agriculture and empowered farmers’ roles in food security. Explores the theme with good explanation of climate resilience and farmer empowerment with minor gaps. Basic understanding of the theme with limited explanation of climate resilience or farmer roles. Minimal exploration of the theme; key concepts about resilience or food security are unclear. Does not demonstrate understanding of the theme or its relation to food security.
Step 2: Research on Causes of Hunger Comprehensive research covering multiple causes (climate change, poverty, inequality, resource scarcity, fragile food systems) using reliable sources. Good research with most main causes identified and sourced from mostly reliable websites. Covers some causes of hunger but lacks depth or uses sources with limited reliability. Research is incomplete or superficial; few causes identified with questionable sources. Little to no research evident; unreliable or no sources cited.
Step 3: Exploration of Sustainable Solutions Insightful selection and explanation of multiple effective, long-term sustainable solutions with clear impact and inspiration. Explains several sustainable solutions with some detail on their impact or inspiration. Identifies some solutions but explanations lack depth or clarity on their importance. Mentions few solutions with minimal or unclear explanations of their sustainability or impact. No meaningful exploration or explanation of sustainable solutions.
Step 4: Contribution Post and Engagement Well-written post clearly states a sustainable solution with strong justification aligned with "Sowing Resilience". Actively engages by providing thoughtful, supportive comment or question on peer posts. Clear post with justification and appropriate engagement through comment or question. Post includes a sustainable solution with basic justification; engagement is minimal or generic. Post lacks clarity or justification; engagement with peers is limited or absent. Post is missing or irrelevant; no engagement with peer posts.
Use of Reliable Resources & Citation Effectively uses multiple reputable sources (FAO, UNICEF, etc.) cited correctly throughout research and post. Uses reputable sources with minor citation inconsistencies. Uses some reliable sources but with inconsistent citation or limited variety. Few or unreliable sources cited; citations are incomplete or inconsistent. No reliable sources cited or improper use of information without attribution.

Conclusion

By completing this WebQuest, students explored the global challenge of hunger and discovered how resilience in agriculture can protect vulnerable communities. By researching causes and proposing sustainable solutions, they transformed information into meaningful ideas for action.
