Introduction

Working Families - Local Offer

 

According to the U.S. Census, America has the worlds highest rate of children living in single parent households with children under the age of 18, 10.6 Million to be exact. Of that 10.6 Million: 

  • 7.9 Million led by Mother
  • 2.7 Million led by Fathers

All of these families suffer or may be challenged with facing instability via lack of finances nutrition sources, access to adequate healthcare and equity,. Back in 1930s with the passing of the Social Security Act, Agricultural Adjustment Act, and several other policies later on, the foundation for programs such as SNAP, TANF, Medicaid and childcare assistance were created. Their objectives were to provide aide to families with dependent children in various forms. 

Ironically many single parent households qualify for these programs , however not all do because they earn too much. The unmet need here is that the children of there families are still disadvantage because although their parents are within a different tax bracket there familes are burden with twice the hardship in the following:

  • Securing and maintaining employment 
  • Access to affordable nutritious foods
  • Affordable Childcare options
  • 24 Hour childcare services
Task

The ultimate task is to create government sponsored and community based funding for single parent families to secure and maintain high wage employment and education via access to childcare and access to nutritional foods.

*Qualifications for these services and benefits will be tailored to single parent households, that are employed or attempting a bachelor degree program FULL-TIME*

 

 

IT TAKES A  VILLAGE . . .!

 

A Referral Agency will provide resources and raise funding for single parent households to end generational wealth and obtain financial security.

  • A resource and referral agency will provide funding and resources to single-parent families

  • This agency will locate, inform and assist with enrollment of collegiate and skill training opportunities.

  • The agency will advocate alongside volunteers and other professionals for employment opportunities and resources in the Hampton Roads community. 

  • The agency will petition to raise welfare limits on SNAP, TANF, and other welfare benefits and eligibility to verified single-parent households.

  • The agency will offer education training in areas such as budgeting, financial planning and organization skills .

  • The agency will receive most of its funding through donations and sponsorships, grants and government funding.

The organization will be a nonprofit, with employees and volunteers with experience working with families or communities and financial planning. After carefully reviewing the research, and statistics of the Hampton Roads community, the writer of this proposal believes in gaining generational wealth through access to high wage employment secured via higher education and adequate access to childcare. The writer believes families require funding and resources to acquire the training needed to provide a substantial life equivalent to that of a two-parent household.

  • The organization will be located in Norfolk, VA and have triage services to link parents with resources within their immediately cities.

Evaluation

Unfortunately many families must exhaust all resources to qualify for SNAP under the eligibility requirements. When there are limitations or eligibility requirements not all will qualify, even those that actually need the service. The goal is for families to relieved of a food burden. No family should  The SNAP eligibility criteria are for low income households. Family household income cannot be more than $2,250 for most families  The SNAP policy has proven to to keep people dependent upon the benefits and living in poverty. 

 

The build back better Act of 2022 limited child care costs for families to no more than 7% of income, for families earning up to 250% of state median income. This allowed many families with higher incomes to to qualify for assistance.

Conclusion

In conclusion, 

This agency will relieve single parent families of the simple challenges that they have stood in their way of advancement in society. Social workers can work alongside families of this unique dynamic and create solutions for ftuure families to come. Resolutions for the generational stagnancy among these families would beneficial both to the children and parent as both would be given the support need to sustain and reach a reasonable life.
