Who’s Who in the Story? Understanding Character Traits in Fiction

Introduction

Have you ever met a character in a story who felt so real, you could imagine being friends with them? In this WebQuest, you will explore how authors create believable and interesting characters using words, actions, and thoughts. Get ready to dive into the world of fiction and uncover what makes characters tick!

Your task is to:

  • Choose one character from a story assigned by your teacher (e.g., Charlotte’s Web or Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone).

  • Analyze that character’s traits based on their words, actions, and thoughts.

  • Create a “Character Profile Poster” that includes the character’s traits, evidence from the text, and a creative visual representation (hand-drawn or digital).

  1. Read the assigned story or chapters and take notes about the character.

  2. Use a character trait list to identify 3–5 key traits of the character.

  3. For each trait, find and record at least one quote or example from the book as evidence.

  4. Use the provided template or your own creativity to design the Character Profile Poster.

  5. Submit your poster to your teacher and prepare to present it briefly to the class.
