This lesson is to teach students how to round whole numbers to the nearest tens place. There are helpful hints to help them succeed in rounding whole numbers. 

Task

The purpose of this website is to help teach students how to round whole numbers from 1-100 to the nearest tens place. This website contains helpful hints, explanations, and games to reinforce the concept of rounding numbers to the tens place.The objective of this site is that students will be able to round whole numbers from 1-100 to the nearest tens place by understanding the rules of rounding to the nearest tens by using a number line as a tool. The students will be provided with different activities to help them learn rounding whole numbers. The following activities include, Kahoot, worksheets, along with other games that helps them learn about rounding.

"Good Morning, today we are learning about rounding whole numbers to the nearest tens place.

“Boys and girls, pay close attention to this video. I will be asking three specific questions when this video is complete. 

Recall our anchor chart on place value. Today we will focus on rounding to the tens place. Everyone in my class knows how to write their numbers 1 to 100. Today I will show you how to work with a number line where not all the numbers will be listed. Now, I am going to draw a number line on the smart board. Let’s review skip counting by tens, starting with ten, so this way you can help me label my number line. 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100. Watch as I demonstrate labeling the number line. I will also put hash marks for each individual number but I will only label every tens place. Explain that you can use a number line to figure out which tens the number you are trying to round is closer to. (Say rounding means which tens place is closer.) (If the number you are rounding is 5 or more, round up to the nearest tens place. If the number you are rounding is 4 or less, round down to the nearest tens place.) 

Example: I have $20 to spend at the store and I want to buy a toy and some candy. My total comes out to $18.52. Is that closer to $10 or $20?

Explain to students that remembering is always easier when it goes with a catchy phrase. I will teach you how to remember rounding for the rest of your life.

Evaluation

The Kahoot quizzes will be used to determine if the students understand the lesson. The two worksheets (teacher choice) will be used as grades, but the main grade will be based off of the group projects. A grade will be given based on the success of the group projects and each students contribution. The group project will consist of students working in either partners or groups to create a poster with the rules of rounding whole numbers. The teacher can make the decision. The rubric for the group project is shown below.

Conclusion

This provides the necessary scaffolding for teaching rounding whole numbers from 1-100 to the nearest tens place. There is an introduction, guided practice, independent work, and a group project. After completing the lesson, students will be able to round whole numbers individually and work on a group project with minimal help from the teacher. The students will be engaged in different activities to help them learn to round whole numbers to the nearest tens place. The students will continue to practice rounding after the lesson by playing more educational games on ABCya and Kahoot.
