Body Systems

Introduction

Our Body Systems

Welcome to an exciting adventure learning about the human body! You have been selected to join a team of scientists to investigate and become an expert on one of the human body systems. Once you finish your investigation you are to present your finding to the scientist community. For your presentation you must do a research on your system and create a PowerPoint.

A body system refers to a group of organs that co-ordinate in various activities thus achieving the same general function in the body. There are many systems in the human body. This webquest focuses on six human body systems:

  • Circulatory system
  • Digestive system
  • Respiratory system
  • Nervous system
  • Skeletal system
  • Excretory System

These systems all work together to keep our bodies running smoothly and to keep us healthy and alive!

Task

You will be assigned a human body system to research. Your job is to create a power point presentation on your body system that you share with the class (Scientist Community). You will also complete a human body booklet about all the systems based on information you learn from watching other scientists' (students’ )presentations.

Your presentation must include the following requirements:

Part 1: Introduction
Tell the name of your organ system and describe the major functions.

Part 2: Diagram
Provide a diagram of your body system with the major parts or organs labeled with their name and functions.

Part 3: Teamwork
Explain how your body system works with others in the body.

Part 4: Fun Facts

Find 5 facts about your body system or its parts.

Process

Your class (scientist community) will be divided into 6 teams of 4 - 5 students. Your teams's task is to learn all about one  system of the human body. Your teacher will assign a human body system to your team.

  • Use the links under each system to do research and learn information about your human body system. (if you want you can use books and encyclopedias from the library too)
  • Take notes  or complete the graphic graphic organizer sample(Click here for the graphic organizer).
  • Use your notes and facts gathered to write paragraphs for each section.
  • Create a power point presentation (slideshow) about your body system (have atleast 8-10 slides).(Click here for the slide planner)

(Click here for the human body system presentation checklist)

  • Present your finished presentation to class to the class.
  • Watch your classmates’ presentations and complete a booklet about the six human body systems.

Conclusion

WELLDONE ON COMPLETING THE WEB QUEST

After completing this web quest, you should have a better understanding of the human body. This web quest offered you the opportunity to explore the digestive system, circulatory system, skeletal system, nervous system, excretory system and respiratory system. Through this webquest you have learned the various organs present in each human system and its function.

Concluding Questions for the BODY SYSTEMS WEBQUEST

In your body system groups, discuss and answer the following questions:

  1. What is the most important thing you learned when completing this webquest?
  2. What is the most interesting thing you learned when completing this webquest?
  3. What information about body systems would you most want to share with others?
  4. Why do you think it is important to know about body systems?
Teacher Page

The Webquest is designed for Grade 5 students as part of their Science lesson under the topic body systems. Furthermore, the lesson takes into account the key competencies highlighted in the National Curriculum (NC) of Maldives.

I have design this Webquest as a technological tool to teach Body Systems.  Webquests provide an avenue for interactive, cooperative andconstructive learning.  They are pedagogical in nature as they allow for seamless integration of curriculum.  In this particular quest, students, while engaged in the inquisitive process, will naturally be achieving the prescribed learning outcomes dealing precisely with Technology and Understanding Managing Self (UMS).  Because Webquests are inquisitive in nature, they intuitively spark students’ curiosity as they themselves navigate through the various links and activities.   In addition, Webquests easily lend themselves to meeting the needs of all learners.  Ability grouping can alleviate student frustrations and provide a strong foundation for cooperative learning.

The Webquest asks a team of students to research the structure and function of one system and how it is interconnected to the other body systems.  Upon completion of their research, each team will present their findings to the class.  Students will be evaluated on their ability to find and retrieve information on the Internet as well as the quality and creativity of their presentation.

The timeline for the webquest is 90 minutes (double period of 45 minutes). It may vary according to computer and class time available.

STANDARDS

This webquest was designed with the provincial curriculum standards from Maldives New Curriculum: Science Syllabus for grade 5.   The learning outcomes are also taken from the science syllabus as well as the key competency guide of Maldives National Curriculum.

Learning Outcome:

LL1.5: Describe that multicellular organisms consist of systems which perform different functions.

Indicators

This is evident when the student:

Identifies the organs that make up the skeletal system and respiratory system.

Recognizes that body systems are made up of different organs and perform specific functions.

Identifies the functions of various systems in humans (e.g. respiratory, skeletal, circulatory, nervous, excretory system and digestive system.

Shows curiosity in exploring their own body and questioning about the structure or function of the body.

Strand:Life and Living

Sub-Starnd:Living things, their structure and function.

TEACHER PROCESS

This webquest can be used in a number of different ways in order to meet the specific needs of your student population.  It is designed to be administered in fours and fives, but can easily work in partners or small groups.

 Factors to consider:

  • Number of students
  • Frequency of instruction
  • Compatibility of learners
  • Accessibility of computers
  • Ability or random grouping

The activities are designed to build background knowledge, using technology as a tool, so that students can acquire information regarding their particular body system and then present it in a creative way to their classmates.

Activities may be easily adapted or modified based on the needs of student population.
