Where in the World?

Introduction

Have you ever wondered how explorers discovered new lands? πŸ—ΏπŸœπŸ

How do you think a pirate ☠️ knows where to find the hidden treasure? πŸ’°

How does your mom or dad know how to get to your grandmother's house? 🏑

The answer is: a map! πŸ—Ί

Task

Today, you and your partner will get to be explorers!  Together you will learn about directions and explore what is north, east, south, and west of the United States of America. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ  You will put your new explorer knowledge to work using a map of a neighborhood.  Finally, you and your partner will follow directions to find a special treasure just for you.

Process

Now that you know a little bit about maps from our reading, check out this video to learn more and to practice finding the four cardinal directions.

Ready to do some exploring?  Copy and paste the link below.  Print this worksheet, then work with your partner to cut out and paste the continents in the correct place and label the oceans.  Discuss with your partner the following questions to answer on the back:

1. What continent is south of Europe?

2. What ocean is west of North America?

3. What continent is furthest south?

4. What ocean is east of Africa?

5.  What continent is south of the continent where we live?

Think about what you have learned so far about maps.  What are some of the vocabulary words you have learned?  Can you find the legend on this map?  What about the compass rose?

For this assignment, I want you to work on your own to answer the questions underneath the map.  Check with your partner to see if you have answered the questions correctly.

Now is your chance to really explore.  Find the envelope on my desk with your and your partner's name.  Follow the directions.  Look carefully at the map and the legend, then follow the written directions to find your special treasure.  Happy Hunting! 😊

If you've finished all of the above and others are still working, check out this video to learn even more about maps!
