Where the Wild Things are Activity

Introduction

Hey Students!

We're going have fun learning how to retell a story today! First, we're going to read about a boy named Max with a BIGGGG imagination! Max likes going on adventures. Do you like going on adventures? Can you think about an adventure you'd like to go on?

Grade: 1st Grade

Standard: 1.RL.2.2 Retell stories, fables, and fairy tales in sequence, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.

Through this activity, students will retell a story in a fun activity. Not just any story- this comes with a few challenges to make it more fun.

Objective: Retelling a story through the use of recalling events and depicting them by drawing pictures.

Task

Through this activity, students will listen to a read-aloud of a story. After hearing it, students will then recall the events of the story in order, listening them on a piece of paper. Then, for each event listed, students will draw a picture to accompany each description of event. Students will then tell the story with their new completed worksheet.

Process

Materials needed:

-Internet access to video linked below

-Printed "Recall Worksheet" from below

-Pencil

-Colored pencils or crayons

Telling events in order is so important! Let's look at cake as an example. First, you must mix the wet ingredients like milk, melted butter, and eggs. Next, you add the dry ingredients like flour, baking powder, and cocoa and mix them as well. Then, you bake the cake, let it cool, and put frosting on it at the end. If you didn't complete these steps in order, you may not even end up with a cake! It may turn out as a disaster! The same thing applies to retelling stories. The sequence of events in which a story takes place is so important. If you get the events of the story mixed up or out of order, you may end up with a story that doesn't make sense or a whole different story!

Next, its activity time! We are going to practice retelling a story.

Students need to:

1. Watch the read aloud video below.

2. Next, use their "Recall Worksheet" to determine 6 events in the story. Write down these events under each box listed on the worksheet.

3. Then, draw and color pictures that go along with each event from the story.

4. Finally, use finished worksheets to retell the story to a classmate. Then, go home and share it with a parent, friend, or family member.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated on their ability to accurately retell the story, depict 6 specific events in order, and draw and color corresponding pictures. The rubric is listed in the "Teacher Page" section.

Conclusion

Why is it so important to tell stories in order? Retelling events in the order they happened is so important! We always want to make sure our stories are clear and tell a listener what happened. Recalling and telling stories in order allows us to successfully share stories with others.
