When Sophie Gets Angry-Really, Really Angry - (Scholastic Bookshelf:  Feelings) By Molly Bang (Paperback) : Target

Introduction to the book: In the picture book When Sophie Gets Angry Really, Really Angry.... by Molly Bang Sophie the main character of the story is supposed to be sharing her toy with someone but does not want to and the she gets very annoyed/ frustrated with the idea of sharing her toy. Throughout the book she shows us how she deals with her anger.

 

 

 

 

Task

Objective: Students will be able to accurately recall how the main character reacted to key events in the book and be able to recall a time in their life when they felt frustrated or upset about something that happened to them.

 

Process

Lesson: The teacher will first asking a opening question about the book such as "What does it feel like when you get mad or frustrated?". Once a few students have answered the question and had an opening discussion, the teacher will read the book to the whole class. After the book is read to the students, the teacher will break the students up into a small group of 3-4 people to discuss what happened in the book and the main themes/events that happened, they can also discuss whether or not they agreed with how Sophie reacted and if they would have reacted differently. After being in small groups the students will go back to their regular seating and have some time to silently reflect on the book and the discussion that was being had about the book. Once they have reflected about this, they will have get out a piece of paper and pencil and write about a time they felt angry and were so upset they wanted to stomp there feet and yell like Sophie, they will also write about what they did to cope with the anger and whether it was similar to Sophie's experience or not.

Differentiated Learners: For students with disabilites or are ESL ( English Second Language) the teacher will be there to help reread the book and guide them through comprehension of what is happening throughout the book. The neccessary tools will be used when needed for students who are in need of them. For gifted students they can draw a picture of what a certain experience looked like  for them or help certain groups with a more in depth discussion if some students struggle with the topic.

Evaluation

Recap, Review, Reteach: Once the students have complete their work we will regroup and discuss what they thought of the book, any experiences they would like to share about feeling frustrated or upset and how they coped, we will also discuss the main events that happened and catalysts behind Sophie's behavior. During the open discussion with the class the teacher can ask the students one at a time about a experience if they feel comfortable sharing with the class, in order for the student to feel like there voice is being heard during the conversation.

Conclusion

In Conclusion the lesson can be very beneficial for students to feel form a deeper connection with their peers and have a better understanding of one another a long with advancing their reading comprehension of major events that pertain to a main character in the book.
