What is Culture?

Introduction

Students will be able to define culture as the language, food, clothing, religion, and music of a group of people. 

Students will identify their own culture but filling out a culture pizza. 

Process

Have students watch this video about culture. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o32l-_U6nGY

Have students describe their own culture in America. 

Students will complete a culture pizza about themselves filling in each slice with words and pictures about themselves.

1. Family Members Slice

Write your name and your family members' names.

 

2. Family Traditions Slice

What language(s) do you speak? What is your religion? What holidays do you observe? What object represents your culture?

 

3. Clothing Slice

What kind of clothes do you wear? What are your favorite sneakers?

 

4. Food Slice

Are you a burger addict or a veggie fan? Tell us what your favorite foods are.

 

5. Job Slice

What kind of job would you like to have in the future?

 

6. Sports and Fun Slice

What kind of sports do you like to watch? Which sports do you play? What do you do with your friends?

 

7. Education Slice

What are your favorite subjects in school?

 

8. Technology Slice

What is your favorite type of technology? Cell phone? Television? Computer? Ipad?

 

9. Arts and Entertainment Slice

What's your favorite type of music? What's your favorite movie, TV show, and book?

 

10. Values

Choose some values that represent you. Some examples are honesty, courage, caring, hard working. Write a sentence about why that value is important to you.

Conclusion

Have students share their work with the class. Students will compare their culture with other students' cultures to see similarities and differences between themselves and their classmates.
