Introduction
We are taking a virtual field trip. We are going to visit an animal that lives in North America. Virtual field trip, we will collect information and talk about what we notice and wonder. You will complete this virtual trip with a partner.
We will find information to answer our essential question: What can we learn from animals and their children?
Task
After finishing this virtual field trip, we will complete our learning goals. Our learning goals are:
1-LS1-2. I can read a text and watch a video to learn how animal parents help their offspring survive.
1-LS3-1 I can make observations to explain three ways baby animals are similar to animal parents.
Before we begin, let's think-pair-share. Looking at this photograph,
What animal do you think we will learn about?
Process
| Step 1 |
Click this link to watch the animal we will be learning about. |
|
| Step 2 |
Use the sticky notes provided by your teacher to:
|
|
| Step 3 |
This animal is called a Porcupine. Porcupines have many body parts. These are called Quills. Why do you think porcupines have them? let's think-pair-share |
|
| Step 4 |
Take a look at this photograph, and write to show what you see happening. |
|
| Step 5 |
This book will give us more information about porcupines. You can read it or click the audio button for extra help.
|
|
| Step 6 |
Baby porcupines are called porcupettes. Click on this video to view a porcupette. This video will teach us more about porcupettes. |
|
| Step 7 |
Animal parents work hard to protect their offspring from predators. Predators are other animals that harm porcupines. What body part do you think is useful for the porcupines to protect themselves?
This video will teach us more about protection and defense. |
|
| Step 8 |
Now lets learn about some ways animal parents protect their offspring. |
|
| Step 9 |
Use the venn diagram provided by your teacher to write 2 things that are different and same about adult porcupines and porcuppettes.
|
Evaluation
Now that we learned information. We are going to draw and write to answer our questions. Use the paper provided by your teacher to write and draw information to answer What can we learn from animals and their children?
You must
- Label your drawing using letters and words
- Write and draw information about adult porcupines
- Write and draw information about porcupettes
- Use complete sentences with end punctuation
Conclusion
Animal parents use their body parts to protect themselves and their offspring. When animal parents care for their babies, they give them protection and food.

1-LS1-2 Read texts and use media to determine patterns in behavior of parents and offspring that help offspring survive.
1-LS3-1 Make observations to construct an evidence-based account that young plants and animals are like, but not exactly like, their parents.
