How important do you think Amend XXVI of the Constitution is to you ...
The 26th Amendment to the Constitution was adopted on July 1, 1971. It is a very short amendment which states that the right to vote cannot be denied to anyone eighteen years of age or older on account of age. Before this, the age for voting in some areas was 21. This amendment was passed in response to the Vietnam War. There was a draft in the U.S. and the government was drafting men 18 years and older. Many felt that it was unfair for the government to draft someone who had no say in the election of the people making that decision. Therefore, this amendment was added to the Constitution

[American Civil Liberties Union, 2012; The Constitution: Amendments 11-27, 2012] Forty years later, the Obama administration will issue a statement honoring the passage of the amendment, saying: “Forty years ago, the 26th Amendment to the United States Constitution took effect, lowering the universal voting age in America from 21 years to 18 years. Millions of young Americans were extended the right to vote, empowering more young people than ever before to help shape our country.… The right to vote has been secured by generations of leaders over our history, from the women’s groups of the early 20th century to the civil rights activists of the 1960s. For young people, the movement to lower America’s voting age took years of hard work and tough advocacy to make the dream a reality. Yet, once proposed in Congress in 1971, the 26th Amendment was ratified in the shortest time span of any constitutional amendment in American history.… Today, young adults across America continue to exercise this enormous responsibility of citizenship. Countless young people are involved in the political process, dedicated to ensuring their voices are heard

On November 8th, the voters of Mississippi will be considering a "Personhood Amendment" (Amendment #26) which would give a fertilized egg more rights than a live born woman, and would outlaw abortion and birth control. The threatening part about this amendment (and others like it proposed in all the other States) is that it could be a vehicle to be used in the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade and thus make abortion and birth control illegal throughout the country. This High Tech Uterine Occupation should scare every progressive and every woman. But, the Democratic Party is not working to organize against this dangerous

What made them decide to give 18 year olds the right to vote?
What really gave 18 year olds the right to vote was the fact that they had a chance to fight in the war at 18 years old. So it really didn’t make since that 18 year old kids were able to do something dangerous and not let them vote which is not dangerous so that is why they made that amendment. The text states that, “. During the Vietnam War, the slogan most heard was "old enough to fight .. old enough to vote" during a time 18 year old were drafted into the army. It was passed on March 23, 1971 and officially ratified on July 1, 1971. However, the first national (for President) election they were able to vote in was in 1976” (Which amendment gave 18 year olds a right to vote - Wiki Answers).
Does anybody think that it was unfair for 18 year olds to not vote but fight in the war?
Yes, there is some people that think that it is unfair for 18 year olds to fight in a dangerous war and not vote. Here is what a lady thinks about the fact that 18 year olds can’t vote but can fight in a dangerous war. It shows, “This amendment gives 18-year-olds the right to vote. When it was enacted, the Viet Nam War was going on and 18-year-olds wondered how come they were old enough to go to war and die for their country, but they were not old enough to choose the politicians who made these life and death decisions for them. Don't forget that during Viet Nam, we had a military draft, so as soon as a young man turned 18, he had to immediately go to his local draft board and register. He could be called up for war at any time. If you were in college and your grades slipped, too bad! You would get drafted and off you would go to Viet Nam. My students used to think this was very unfair”. (How important do you think Amend XXVI of the Constitution is to you ... )
