Introduction
Welcome to Ancient Rome, Travelers! At Historic Roman Tours, our guides are brimming with excitement to share our knowledge with you. We cannot wait to show you around!
Perhaps you look around the community where you live and see roads made of concrete or gutters in your streets to allow rainwater to drain.
Do you look at your calendar every day to see what is on your agenda while drinking a cold glass of water from your tap?
Does your grandmother still receive the newspaper every day? or Do you watch the national news and hear that new laws are being passed in Congress or a decision was made by the Supreme Court?
The Ancient Roman Empire was the original creator of these and many more of the things we enjoy today: paved roads, sewage systems, aqueducts, calendars, newspapers, and three branches of government. In this quest, you will learn more about Ancient Rome and create a travel brochure to take home and tell others about this most remarkable empire! Perhaps, you will want to bring them back and show them around!
Let's go!
Task
First, a little introduction to Rome's founding!
Have you ever heard of the legend of Romulus and Remus?
The Seven Hills of Rome?
The Patricians and Plebeians?
NO?! Well, we are so excited that we get to be the ones to tell you all about it!

When you are done, create a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the Ancient Roman Government with our US Government.
Process
At Historic Roman Tours, we like to keep our guests busy learning about the history and culture of Ancient Rome. Here are your tasks. You may do them alone, with a partner, or in small groups of 3-4:
1. Investigate the importance of architecture in Ancient Rome by clicking HERE. With a parent, go to YouTube and research "Roman Concrete" as well as "A Day in the Life of the Coliseum." Then, go to Padlet and detail what you learned about Roman Concrete and at least one important event that happened in the Coliseum.
2. All roads lead to Rome! Learn more about the Roman Road system HERE. Write a short paragraph detailing what materials made up the Roman Road, how many miles it was, where it extended, and the 3 things that made the Roman Road so important. Then, go to Voki.com, pick an avatar and background, type in your paragraph in the text box, and click the bottom button to hear your avatar share your information.
3. Read more about the Emperors of Rome HERE and HERE or elsewhere with the help of a parent. Find two that stand out to you. Create a podcast episode in the form of a news broadcast telling the news of the day about your chosen Emperors. Use podbean.com , enter your google email address, set up your account, and you're all set!
4. Ancient Rome created many important inventions. Explore some of their outstanding contributions and create an advertisement on Canva.com for one invention.
Evaluation
Alright, travelers, time to help us advertise Historic Roman Tours! That's right, your assignment, should you choose to accept it, (although your teacher is assigning it as your final project...):
Design a Travel Brochure
While the roots of modern Rome trace all the way back to Palatine Hill, today there are so many wonderful historic sites to explore, festivals to attend, and events to experience!
1. With a partner from your group, go to canva.com to create a brochure advertising an ancient place found in Italy today. You may choose an important site, an activity, or festival to promote.
2. Research your choice and write a short paragraph, encouraging people to visit your choice.
3. List 5 important facts about your choice.
4. Include other information. This could include: a map of the area, an itinerary, a list of available transportation, major cities or landmarks, historical sites, museums, activities, festivals or other events.
5. Illustrate your canva.com brochure with pictures, graphics, and maps. Make it colorful and eye-catching!
Conclusion
Well, travelers, you might say its the end of the Roman Road. This concludes our tour with you at Historic Roman Tours.
Before you leave, we would love some feedback! Please click on this padlet to let us know what you have learned. Include 5 important facts about any of the following: Rome's founding, government, inventions, architecture, or emperors. And add one thing you would like to know more about. Perhaps something we have not touched on our tour that you would like to read about or research more because we want to continue to improve the quality of our tours.
We realize you have a choice in history field trips, and we thank you for choosing Historic Roman Tours!
