Introduction
WEEK 1 - Year 11 Standard English Module B Contemporary Possibilities: Text 1 - "Boy" (2010)
Lesson Duration 3 hours.
The aim of this lesson series is to introduce students to Module B Contemporary Possibilities Text 1 - "Boy" (2010), a New Zealand feature film directed by Taika Waititi. Students have already watched the film in their own time.
Using ICT, students will conduct research and answer a series of questions to gain background, knowledge and understanding of the film's director and the key social and cultural influences that underpin this text. In groups they will then create a slideshow
This research activity will focus on the importance of “place” or film location/setting to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of how content producers use social and cultural influences evident in the use of language, form and structure, to ‘encode’ their message for successful ‘transmission’ to their intended audience.
In completing this task and lesson plan, students will demonstrate their ability to use literacy, ICT, and effective communication skills to work collaboratively to research, analyse, discuss, evaluate, and create written responses to texts.
Task
Group Activity - Multimedia Presentation - About 'Boy'
You have now watched the film "Boy"!
But if you have forgotten what it was about please click here to watch the trailer again:
But where the hell, is this place that 'Boy' was made and what's so unique about it anyway?
Content creators, don't just throw together some words, images and actions when they create a story. Every word, every image, every action is made with intent and purpose to help you the audience understand and make meaning of their film/text, exactly as they intended.
Part of helping you make meaning is where the film or text is 'set' or located. Director's choose a setting to help their audience better understand the social and cultural factors influencing the characters and driving the action in their film/texts.
Your Group Task: Multimedia Presentation - About 'Boy'
In your allocated groups you will use ICT to research and answer the following questions relating to Taika Waititi’s film “Boy”.
Students will use these answers to create a multimedia presentation in the format of an audio slideshow to present their answers to the class.
The slideshow should be no longer than 3 minutes. Students should embed audio into their slideshow with each group member having a speaking role.
Each group must submit 1 x completed Group activity research sheet and 1 x Google slide presentation to Google classroom at end of class allocated time, Week 1.
