Introduction

Eating is something we do everyday, multiple times a day.  So it would make sense that nutritional knowldge can be used throughout your lifetime.  Eating healthy can benefit you in many ways.  Putting healthy foods into your body can contribute to your physical, mental, and emotional health.  But eating healthy is not a trait that everyone is born with.  It's a lifestyle that you have to learn how to live based on your body type and your dietary needs.  Many people are unaware of the effects of making poor foods choices and how much making the right foodchoices can increase your overall health. It is therefore imperative for everyone to learn about maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle.  Nutritional knowledge can be found from many different sources and the internet, especially in the last few years, has become one of the most widely used sources. There are many websites with valuable information and helpful tips about the importance of nutrition and how to get started living healthy.

Task

Your mission is to find all the items necessary to make a healthy and complete meal.  You will use your super explorer skills to obtain one item from each food group.  Once you have completed this mission, you and a partner will inform your classmates of the origins and benefits of a food from and essential food group of your choice and persuade them to try that food.  Click on "Process" and follow the steps to complete your mission.  Good luck!

Process

Step 1

Find your bread!  Breads and grains are so important that they form the entire base of the food pyramid.  You need 6-11 servings of grains every day!   We know we need bread, but how do we get it?  Where does bread come from? Navigate through the following sites and discover the process of how bread is made.

What does bread do for you?

Let's bake bread!

Answer the questions: where does bread come from, what is it made of, what tools do you need to make bread, and why is bread good for you?

Step 2

Congratulations!  You now have your bread!  Next we need some vegetables.  You have probably been told all your life to eat your vegetables, but why?  Why do we need vegetables?  What nutrients do they give us?   How much do we need?  Discuss these questions with a partner and write down what you think makes vegetables so important.  Then check out the following link to see how close your ideas were.

Time for Veggies

Now that you know why we need vegetables, we can add some lettuce to our meal!

Step 3

We are working our way up to the top of the pyramid!  We have our bread and ourvegetable, so what is next? Fruit! You need 2-4 servings of fruit every day, and there are many different types to choose from.  Let's use apples for our meal today.  We are not just going to eat a solid apple.  We are going to have some fun.  Let's make some applesauce!  Grab a partner and find out the tools and ingredients you need to make applesauce.  Once you have made your list, we as a class will all make applesauce.  Use thesewebsites to find out what you need and what makes apples and other fruits good for you.

What Makes it Good?

Step 4

Now what would a meal be without some meat?  We have to have some protein .  You may be suprised where else you can find protein, though.  Protein not only comes from meat such asbeef, pork, chicken, and fish, but also from beans, eggs, and even nuts!

How much protein do you think you need?  How much do you think is in one serving?  Write down your guess for the number of eggs, grams of fish/chicken/meat, tablespoons ofpeanut butter, and even cups of tofu that you think make up one serving.  Check your answers here:  1 Serving = ?

Now that you know how much we need, we get some chicken!  Our meal is almost complete, but there is one more thing we need...

Step 5

Dairy!  We've got to have some dairy in our meal!  Everyone know that milk comes from cows, but what happens after that?  Write a prediction of what you think happens to milk before it goes into the carton or jug that you pour it from.  Let's find out what really happens.  Let's explore Where Milk Comes From!  After exploring that site, write down three interesting facts you learned about milk to share with the class.

You did it!! You found all the items you need to make your meal!  We now have bread, chickenlettucemilk, and applesauce.  Let's make a chicken sandwich with our homemade applesauce on the side and a nice tall glass of milk!

We've just created a complete, balanced meal!  There is just one more piece left to the mission.  You and a partner can choose one of your favortie foods from any of the essential food groups.  You may use any of the links above or any materials in the classroom to help you find out everything you can about your food.  Then you will design poster illustrating the origin and benefits of that food.  Once you complete your poster, you can present it to the rest of the class and try to convice everyone else that they should try it, too!
