Task

Family structure is evolving everyday. So for this lesson, students will understand describe and identify the different types of family structures, identify which type of family structure their family belongs in, research their own ancestry, and create their own family tree.

Process

This will be an ongoing lesson, so please don't get discouraged with amount of work that this lesson will take!! Understanding families has become a very big issue that the world is facing today. The definition of a "traditional" family has changed, and it is our jobs to know and understand the different types of family. No one family is perfect and no family structure is better than the other. However, "non-tradtional" families should not be shunned upon in this classroom! We all must know, understand, and love one another! Hopefully by the end of this lesson, you will know your classmates more and begin to appreciate one another for their differences. After all, they are what makes you, YOU! This project will end up being a portfolio in which you will hand in at the end of the unit for a grade!

1. To start off the lesson, let's look at this video first which deals with the different types of family structures:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45BVuY9gE5Q

2. Next, you will identify and discuss the different types of family structures discussed in the video and include pictures.

3. Then you will identify which type of family structure your family belongs in. Add pictures.

4. Next comes the fun part: YOUR FAMILY TREE!

First, look at this video discussing a family tree: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PM79Epw_cp8

After viewing the video, you will use this template to create your family tree. Be creative kiddies!! Add pictures and even little fun facts about different family members!

Evaluation

Students will be graded upon the following criteria:

1. Did you identify and explain the different types of family structures with pictures?

2. Did you identify your family structure?

3. Did you complete your family tree?

4. Were you creative?

Conclusion

Although you have completed your tasks in this webquest, your work on your family tree has just started. I challenge you to include aunts, uncles, cousins, or your great-great-great-great grandpa for extra credit, even possibly going to ancestry.com for more information.  Family trees are always changing.  Babies are born into a family, and people die.  Whether you continue your search now or come back to it at a later date, you have already begun the process of putting together many of the puzzle pieces that make up your family tree. I hope this lesson serves as a means for understanding your fellow classmates as well as understanding your own family!
