Introduction
Welcome to Mr Bennetts fraction webquest.
During this webquest you will be exploring Fractions, in particular comparing and locating fractions on a number line. This webquest that you will complete will aim towards the following ACARA descriptor -
Compare and order common unit fractions and locate and represent them on a number line (ACMNA102).
By the end of the webquest you should be accurately and competently placing fractions on a number line. There will be a variety of activities for you to complete, helping you on your quest.
Good luck!
Task
TASK ONE: Basic fraction structure
1. In your math book, write everything that you already know about fractions. The questions you should answer include -
-What is a fraction?
-Why do we use fractions?
-When do we use fractions?
-Where have you seen fractions in the real world?
2. Go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0FZhQ_GkKw and watch this basic video about fractions. While watching this video take note in your math book of the topics that are discussed. The sentence that you write in your math book will be required for grading at the end of the subject.
3. In your math book copy and complete the basic fraction chart (as below). At the completion of the lesson answers will be provided.

TASK TWO: Compare common fractions using a fraction wall
When you are investigating fractions a quick and easy way to see how large they are is using a fraction wall. A fraction wall shows us all common fractions and how large they are in comparison to others.
1. Your task will be to create and complete a fraction wall based on the template below. This should be created in your math book, landscape over an empty A4 page. HINT: the top row is one whole unit, the row below contains two halves (½).

2. Upon completion of your fraction wall there are 13 true or false questions you will need to answer. Following are the questions.
a) Two quarters is equivalent to one half T/F
b) Four sixths is equivalent to two thirds T/F
c) Three fifths is equal to eight tenths T/F
d) Six twenty-fourths is equal to one quarter T/F
e) One fifth is half of one tenth T/F
f) One eighth is half of one quarter T/F
g) One sixth is half of one third T/F
h) One third is half of one sixth T/F
i) One tenth is half of one fifth T/F
j) One tenth is double one fifth T/F
k) One twentieth is half of one tenth T/F
l) Two forty-eighths are one twenty-fourth T/F
EXTENSION: If you complete both of the above tasks, think of a further 10 questions you could ask a classmate in relation to using a fraction wall.
TASK THREE: Create a basic unit fraction number line
In task three you will need to begin to form a fraction number line.
1. Answer the following questions in your book about fractions. These will help to decide how we wil construct our number line.
- What is a fraction? Why do we use fractions? - Can a fraction be below 0?- Can a fraction be above 1? What is it called?- What are some common basic fractions? 2. An example of a basic fraction line could look like the picture below. After copying this into your book, answer the below questions about fractions on a number line.
- Why have we gone from 0 to 1?
- What do the small dots represent?
- What would be the middle fraction?
3. Creating your own fraction number line, place your examples of common basic fractions (from above) onto a number line. This fraction line will be used an a part of your assessment piece.
TASK FOUR: Place fractions on a number line.
Your task will be to use your fraction wall to assist you to put fractions on a number line. Below you have been provided with 24 fractions that you will need to place on this number line. This fraction line will be used an a part of your assessment piece.
It is important to remember that some fractions are the same (equivalent fractions) so it is important to place these on top of each other, not next to each other as they are the same value.

Evaluation
Following is a rubric which will be used for the grading of this topic.

Conclusion
Congratulations for completing all of the tasks!
To conclude this topic you will need to hand up all required work. Ensure that you look at the evaluation rubric prior to handing up. The aim of this is to ensure that all areas have been covered.
As a reward to complete this unit go to the following website and play the fraction version of this game. Your target is to beat my best percentage of accuracy - 96%

Topic Objective:
Compare and order common unit fractions and locate and represent them on a number line (ACMNA102)
ELABORATION: Recognising the connection between the order of unit fractions and their denominators.
Proficiency Strands:
- understanding includes making connections between representations of numbers, using fractions to represent probabilities, comparing and ordering fractions and decimals and representing them in various ways, describing transformations and identifying line and rotational symmetry
