What Does That Mean?? Ballet Terminology Practice

Introduction

Bonjour! Hello!
Welcome to Ballet Terminology Prac
tice!

Throughout this WebQuest, we will be working on our Ballet terms and their definitions.

Do you know any Ballet terms and their correct definitions? Where did you learn them?!

After completing this WebQuest, you will know many Ballet terms and their corresponding definitions that will help you as you continue your Ballet studies!

Task

Your missions, should you choose to accept them...

The learner will be able to accomplish the following:

  • Identify and correctly spell basic Ballet terminology
  • Accurately define multiple terms with correct spelling and grammar
  • Match Ballet terms with their correct definitions
  • Use context clues to make educated hypotheses on what an unknown Ballet term may mean

Process

Phase 1:

Please take out:

  1. Dictionary of Classical Ballet Sheet
  2. Ballet Terms Quiz
  3. "Can You Guess?" Sheet

If you do not have these resources, see your teacher to print them from the Teacher's Page of this WebQuest.

At your table, go through the Dictionary of Classical Ballet sheet on your own. You may find it helpful to work with a partner and take turns using the pronunciation guide to say the terms out loud with their definition. Feel free to take notes in pencil on this sheet that will help you remember the definitions.

Take your time memorizing these terms and taking notes if you need!

Phase 2:

Now that you have looked over and memorized the Basic Ballet Terms, take turns quizzing your tablemates quietly on the terms and their definitions. You may use the Dictionary of Classical Ballet sheet to assist you in quizzing your tablemates, but when you are being quizzed, make sure you do not use it!

Do your tablemates have any tools or devices they have come up with that may help them remember their terms and definitions? Remember to help your tablemates out by encouraging them and sharing any helpful tips!

Phase 3:

Great job! You are now ready to take the Ballet Terms Quiz and complete the "Can You Guess?" worksheet!

Please put your Dictionary of Basic Ballet Terms somewhere that you cannot see it and where you will not be tempted to look at it!

Take out the Ballet Terms Quiz. Underneath each term, please write the definition in pencil on the line. Once you have completed each of these terms, place the quiz face-down, at the top of your table.

Now, take out the "Can You Guess?" worksheet. On this, there are three ballet terms that you have not studied. On the lines underneath the term, please use your context clues and knowledge to make your best educated guess on the definition.

Make sure your name is clearly written on each paper and turn them in to your teacher quietly.

Great job! You are a master of Ballet Terms!
Give yourself a pat on the back and your tablemates a high five!

Teacher Page

This WebQuest is best used with 5-8 grade students in the Dance classroom, or 9-12 grade students in the Beginning Dance Classroom.

You will need to create your own "Dictionary of Ballet Terms" including the basic ballet terms, a pronunciation of each, and the literal definition--not the movement definition! (Plie, Releve, Passe, Tendu, Efface, Croise, Petit Battement, etc.)

You will also need to create a short answer quiz with 10-15 terms on it, and a space for students to fill in the definition.

The final document you will need to create is the "Can You Guess?" page. This features 3 ballet terms not featured within their "Dictionary" page. The students will use their context clues to make their best guess on the definition, so these terms need to be similar in difficulty to the ones featured on the dictionary and quiz.

A rubric for the Quiz has been included in this WebQuest.

All areas can be adjusted based on student experience, classroom resrouces available, and student literacy level.
