What can I afford? (An exploration of linear inequalities)

Introduction

Inequalities help us to see limits. A huge thing in life that has limits is the money we have. There's only so much to spend and having a budget helps us to spend it wisely. Today you will be given a budget and then have to write inequalities to help you figure out how to spend that money.

Process

Write all of your answers on a sheet of paper. This will be due on Monday if it is not finished at the end of the hour.

1. When you first get hired on your job, you are guaranteed to make more than P20,000 each month. Write and graph an inequality representing how much you might make on your job.

2. After you and your boss agree on a salary it turns out that every month you make P28,000 at your job. Write and graph an inequality of how much money you have to spend each month.

3. Your first expense every month is rent. Rent for your apartment costs you P10,000. Write your new amount to spend as an inequality that needs to be solved and then solve that inequality.

4. Some of your money will go to transportation, so you can get around. The meter for a taxi ride starts at P40. Write and graph an inequality for what you might spend on a single taxi ride.

5. Every minute you spend in the cab is P8 on top of the intial fee of P40. Assuming your budget for transportation is P4,000, how many minutes per month can you spend in the cab? Write and graph an inequality expressing how many minutes each month you can spend in the taxi.

6. How many minutes do you think a taxi ride will be on average? In the last problem, you found the total amount of minutes you can afford to spend in the taxi. Use this information to help you write an inequality on how many taxi rides you can afford to take each month, assuming your taxi rides average out to your average amounts of minutes.

7. A jeepney ride costs 8 pesos. If you only rode the jeepney, write an inequality for how many jeepney rides you could afford based on your transportation budget.

8. Likely you'll choose a combination of taxis and jeepneys to get around. Assume you ride in a taxi, 10 times in a month and on average it will cost you P60. How many jeepney rides will you be able to still make? Write and graph an inequality representing this.

9. After taking out of your budget transportation and rent, write and graph an inequality for how much money you have left to spend.

10. Another important part of your budget is food. Let's assume you budgeted P8,000 for food. You spend P4,800 at the grocery store for food. You plan on eating 10 meals out a month. Write, solve and graph an inequality expressing how much you can spend at each meal out.

11. What are some of your favorite meals that you eat out? Pick at least 3. Let a variable represent each one of those meals and then write an inequality representing how many of your ten meals out you might get of each one.

(Example: b=Big Mac meal, p=S and R pizza, r= KFC Texas bbq rice bowl       b+p+r≤10)

12. Look up the prices of each of those favorite meals. Write those here.

13. Write an inequality of how many you can get of any of those meals within your allotted food budget once the money for groceries hsa been taken out. Use this inequality to decide how many of each meal you will get. Make sure you don't spend above your budgeted food money.

14. Another important thing to factor into your budget is communication. Part of that is picking an internet plan. Research 3 different internet plans and write how much each plan costs.

15. Select the plan that you think is the best and subtract it from what was left in your budget. Write this as an inequality showing how much money you have left to spend on other things or save.

16. You've been looking at a new computer you want to buy for P18,000. This is something you'll need to save up for. If you want to buy it in at most 6 months, how much will you have to save a month in order to get it? Write this as an inequality showing at least how much you would have to save each month and then graph it.

17. Was there enough left in your budget to save for this laptop? Write and graph a final inequality showing how much you have in your budget after saving.

Conclusion

Hopefully you learned lots over this webquest about how linear inequalities can help us visualize our budget.
