Introduction

The Australian WebQuest
As a group of friends, you decide to go stop the boredom at home during school holidays and go to the bush for adventure.
After a while the terrain becomes unfamiliar and you discuss turning back, just as you want to go one of you calls out, “look there”, pointing at an old derelict house set near the sloops of a mountain.
The weeds are tall, dead looking, the house old, worn and looking neglected. As you get closer you can see a rusty old sign that says:

Danger no trespassing!
As you sneak through the fence you see an old wooden chest partly sticking out of the dirt. You look around for something to dig it out with and spot a rusty old piece of metal. With a racing heart beat, you start digging, taking turns until the chest dislodged itself.
You quickly look around to see if there is nobody else. You brush off the dirt and half lift, half drag the box to the back of the house. As you brush off the rest of the dirt you see an inscription, it says: open if you dare! A nervous look to your friends and a nod from one of them makes you decide to take the challenge.
You slowly open the box and a dusty smell wafted out of the box.
Inside you see a map and it says:
Process
Step 1: Read through the task and make sure you understand the requirements.
As Captain Cook’s group of advisors, you will be producing a portfolio called, Cook’s Travel Documents.” Please make sure your name is also on it. This portfolio will include all the decisions made by your group, you can be creative and add images to support your writing. When finished your port folio will be presented by you to your class.
Step 2: Complete Task 1.
Task 1 requires you to think about the role and duties of each group member and it also requires you to set group goals. This will help you that you will complete your tasks on time.
Step3: Complete task 2.
Task 2 requires you to go brainstorming to get you thinking about things you will need to take with you on your voyage. Remember to save your work so you don’t lose it.
Step 4: Resource Section.
To assist you with planning the trip, there is a resource section at the end of this page available for you, to browse and gather information from. This will give you a starting point as to what information you should seek. It is in your hands to research and collect information from a range of other sources, such as the Internet and or library.
Step 5: Complete task 3.
Now you have had a look at your resources, complete task 3.
Task 3: Find a map with Captain Cook’s route on it. After you insert your map in “Captain Cook’s travel document portfolio” explore what type of ship would be best suitable to make the journey on for Captain Cook. Think about things such as: how many people it will have to carry and space for food, water and other supplies. Remember to find more information on the Internet. Document your decisions in your portfolio and save it.
Step 6: Complete task 4.
Now you have chosen a ship, you will need to select a crew for Cook’s voyage. Again, the resource section is available for this to help you with the “old names” of the crew from that timeframe Captain Cook travelled in, but do not rely on this source only. Your final decision will also need to be recorded in your “Cooks Travel Document portfolio”.
Step 7: Complete task 5.
So far, you have selected a ship and a crew suitable for Cook’s voyage. Now it is time to decide on the supplies needed. Don’t forget to record your final decision.
Step 8: Revise Cook’s Travel Documents.
As a group, you have decided on the ship, crew list and supplies of “Cook’s Travel Document.” Go back into the document and confirm and revise all your answers ready for the final submission.
Step 9: Reflection.
Create a group reflection that will include your opinions about what you liked about the tasks and how well your group has achieved the tasks. You put this at the end of “Cook’s Travel Documents port folio” to complete your group reflection. Remember to safe your work.
