Web-quest Rotation and Revolution

Introduction

Welcome: Earth Rotation and Revolution
Description: Students will diagram Earth's rotation and revolution and describe how rotation and revolution causes day and night and the seasons on Earth. Students will demonstrate Earth's rotation and revolution.
Grade Level: 4th
Curriculum: Science

Task

1. Define key terms

2. Complete the fill in the blank and questions worksheet on Rotation, Revolution, and Seasons

3. Draw representation of Rotation and Revolution

5. Fill in the chart about the Seasons

6. Work on group project

Groups 1 and 3  >  create a rough draft of diagram with information

Groups 2 and 4  >  create a rough draft of the information you need to explain your demonstrations

7. Complete final draft for your projects

Process

Team 1 -  Matthew, Allie, Issac, Alec, Jalen, Lucy

You will draw a diagram showing how the Earth's rotation on it's axis causes day and night. You will also need to answer the following questions explaining your findings:

1. Define rotation.

2. What does Earth rotate on?

3. How long does one complete rotation take?

4. What is one effect of the Earth's rotation?

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Team 2 - Morgan, Riley, Jackson, Elena, John Park, Jay

You will be given a flash light and a globe to demonstrate how the Earth's rotation causes day and night. As you are demonstrating, you must also explain why the Earth's rotation causes day and night (ex. which direction its facing, is it light or dark).

Team 3 - Lauren, Abby, Jackie, Advaith, John P., Micheal

You will draw a diagram showing how Earth's revolution around the sun causes the seasons on Earth. You will also need to answer the following questions explaining your findings:

1. Define revolution.

2. How long does one complete revolution take?

3. What does the Earth's axis always point to?

4. What is one effect of the Earth's revolution?

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Team 4 - Pranav, Julie, Aubrey, Nick, Deandra, Justin

You will be given a globe and a flashlight to demonstrate how the Earth's revolution on its axis causes the seasons on Earth (indirect and direct sunlight). As you are demonstrating, you must also explain what about the Earth completing its revolution, causes the seasons (ex. northern and southern hemispheres, solstices, equinox, temperatures, and length of days).
