Wanting To Make a Difference

Introduction

The noble path of being a nurse, how to be one, and what is required have changed over the time since Florence Nightengale first made it a thought to the world. There have been multiple discoveries and advances in healthcare that have been implemented, leading us to where we are now.

Task

Three Nurses that are to be compared: Dorothea Dix, Margaret Sanger, and Ariel Correira.

Dorothea Dix was a social reformer who became devoted to the welfare of the mentally ill, leading to the opening of humane asylems for help these patients who have mental illness. She fought to create a safe place for the mentally ill to get what they reqired that was different from others who were self sufficient.  Her studies took her to Europe where she saw, first hand, the differences between public and private hospitals leading her to fight for reformation of hospitals for the mentally ill in other countries as well.

Margaret Sanger is known as the founder of planned parenthood. She stood up for the right of the woman and her family. SHe believed that something needed to be done when there is a family that can't take care of all of the children brought into the world. She saw beyond the thought that women were merely child-bearing machines.

Ariel Correira was inspired to go into nursing after working in geriatrics. Although she traveled from job to job, she was reminded at one point the passion she felt when helping the elderly. Seeing the abuse that was occuring in assisted living facilities and skilled nursing facilities, she knew that the only way to make a difference was to work her way to a position where her voice would be heard.

Evaluation

Beyond all of their devilishly good looks..... all three have different stories but their motivation is the same: They all wanted to make a difference. They wanted to move further into a future where they could change the view of the public to reveal what was really happening and how to make it better. These advancements couldn't have been made without that one push/story and history was then made.

Dorothea with her mental health, Margaret with women's protection, and Ariel with Elderly abuse awareness. All want to make a difference in the line of nursing and knew the way to do it was the become educated and educate the ones around them.

Conclusion

Motivations changed with all of them over time. More education was desired and what drives them changed over the course of their lives but the desire to make a difference is what started their nursing journey and unites them regardless of what era they originate in.
