Using Digital Storytelling for narrative essay writing

Introduction

The grade 10 learners must create narrative essays by using digital storytelling as a scafolding tool.

By the end of the lesson the students should develop in:

  • Knowledge about narrating and how it applies to narrative essay writing
  • Skills of using digital devices in order to create narrated stories in the form of digital storytelling
  • Values- they should use their own skills and past experiences to tell their story

 

At the end of creating digital stories in groups the learners, the learners will be given the individual task of
writing essays.

Task

You must watch the short video clip of Tsotsi from the following link:

Answer the questions that follow pertaining to this video.

1. Explain them what is going on in the clip. That is, what is the storyline?

2. Imagine Tsotsi was the only evidence of what life in modern-day South Africa is like –

    a) What impression of the country do you receive 

    b) What clues are there in it about the lives of ordinary people living there?

    c) What is the setting of the story? Give details of this setting.

After you have answered these questions, get into groups of three and create digital stories that will eventually answer the essay question: "My daily Life in the Township"

The following assessment scale will be used to assess the students:

Conclusion

1. Ask volunteer groups to present their digital stories (this can be finished in the next class)

2. Give them the homework task of drafting a narrative essay with the topic “My Daily Life in the Township”– here they can draw on aspects of the digital stories they have created as groups as well as Tsotsi.

3. Reiterate main points on what digital stories are.
