Understanding Diabetes

Introduction

hello!

Today we will be focussing on: Diabetes

Considering the amount of people suffering from diabetes withn Australia, it is important for students to develop undertanding within this area. The idea behind this WebQuest is to deliver students with an interesting and informative activity where students can further their understanding of Diabetes.

Task

When looking at Diabetes, we must first understand what it is?

Within groups or 2-3, we will produce a poster on either type 1 or 2 diabetes.

The Teacher will split students into groups based on mixed ability, students will look at type 1 or type 2 diabetes as the focus.

Students will deliver a presentation focusing on one question provided by the Teacher.

The Teacher and Class will discuss the findings

Process

When students are split into groups, studnets will look at questions relating to Diabetes:

students will be given 1 hour in their groups

(1 paragraph per answer)

All students must answer question 1 but can select 2 of the remaining 8 questions. The Teacher will work with pairs to to choose varying questions for the presentation

choose 3 questions to Answer:

  1. what is diabetes?
  2. what is the different between type 1 and 2 diabetes and what is more common?
  3. what can be done to prevent diabetes?
  4. have you had any experience with diabetes in your family?
  5. what foods can you eat when you have diabetes?
  6. is there a cure? what can be done to manage it?
  7. global facts on diabetes?
  8. who is at risk and why?
  9. how is it diagnosed?

When students have completed their poster, they will select one question to explain to the class in a group discussion.

The Teacher and students will look at what they have found out and discuss with the class the findings

Look through these websites for information on Diabetes:

Evaluation

The Teacher will evaluate students through the presentation and the poster developed with peer.

The idea behind the presentation is that students will have an opportunity to listen to all 9 of the questions provided by the Teacher through the presentation.  Although the groups will choose 2 out of the 9, it is the idea that by giving the students options they wil develop ownership and have varied responses.

It was important that studentts had an understanding of what diabetes is, and as such i made it compulsory for students to complete question 1.

This is a studnet focussed task, where students have control over their learning

Conclusion

Through participation in the WebQuest, studnets will increase their undertanding and awareness of Diabetes. Considering the number of people effected by diabetes, having understanding of the cause and effects will be important part of the students' education.
