Continuing our historical non- fiction journey on the Underground RailRoad
4/5th Grade Unit Plan
Students will be interacting throughout the week with the following sites:

Other technology students will be working with to complete their task are the use of:
Smart-boards- to share with class peers their discussion answers and thoughts as a whole group
iPads or tablets- For videoing their presnetations
School computers- Creating their powerpoints or creating their presentation tasks.
Task
Day 1 Tasks /Objectives:
Students will follow and demonstrate 75% mastery on how to use their search engines to locate a specific site.
Students will read text off their electronic device(iPAD, computer, etc)as the teacher reads aloud and participate in group discussion questions.
Students will write down their answers to there task sheet given.
Students will show understanding of reading through discussions with peers and teacher.
Day 2 Tasks/ Objectives:
Introduce the use of interest research search engine uses.
How to use parenthesis and decode URL meanings.
Navigate among multiple text pages and how to return back to homepage and or search engine.
Complete “search” engine task sheet with 85% accuracy or higher
Day 3 Tasks/Objectives: Applying knowledge gain from day 2 on how to research effectively through independent practice application.
Complete independent research on topic and questions.
Complete research steps and questions
Write a friendly letter
Day 4 Tasks/ Objectives:
Listen and take notes on digital media and text.
Discuss opinions and factual information with peers.
Complete online research efficiently.
Creates a digital online story of a Hero from the Underground Railroad.
Day 5 Task/Students will bring their iPAD up and the teacher with connect it to projector.
Students will share their video of their project work.
All students will be require to be a reviewer to at least 2 presentations. The feedback strips will be included in their grade.

Process
There are 5 days of task oriented work. Students will be interacting with the teacher in:
Whole group
Partnerships
One on One with teacher for feedback
small group collaborations
Students will complete daily task that will scaffold to the proceeding day's lesson.
Students will be using mulitple technological resources to complete each daily tasks given.
Evaluation
Students will have daily rubrics given out for them to follow. They will also have access to the smartboard powerpoint slides that is reviewed prior to the start of each lesson.

Conclusion
At the end of this unit student should be able to:
Apply research skills and tools effectively with minimal teacher guidance
Demonstrate understanding of how to navigate the search engine and locate accurate, trusted infromation.
Apply writing strategies taught and produce neat and clear reports(typed or hand written)
Apply knowledge of various text online and text from classroom books on the Underground Railroad
Demonstrate mastery of video recording and presenting research information.
