Two Points of View: Loyalists vs. Patriots

Introduction

Welcome! Today you will analyze two different points of view:

The Patriots vs. The Loyalists.

Task

You and your group will create TWO posters.

One will be something you could find on a street in Colonial Virginia, trying to drum up enthusiasm for the battle against England. You should use expressions like, "Taxation without Representation!" and quote the freedoms demanded in the Declaration of Independance.

The other will be one that you also might find on the streets of Colonial Viriginia, but this one is from the point of view of the Loyalists. You should encourage colonists to stay LOYAL to the King, and to stop the treason that the patriots were insisting upon.

Process

WHAT TO DO:

1.  Divide into your groups.

2.  Decide what your arguments are going to be from each side.

3.  Get two poster papers and sketch out your poster.

4.  Check your spelling before you make it permanent!

5.  Illustrate your poster. There should be NO WHITE SPACE, unless it is on purpose, like if you draw the flag of either country, or if you have a text bubble with a white background.

6.  Be creative! This is supposed to PERSUADE people to FIGHT for or against something, so throw lots of information and pictures onto it!

7.  Make sure every group member is doing something.

8.  You may use your book, your notebook, the Internet, or your memory banks, but do some research!

9.  Make sure all group members' names are on the BACK of the poster!

10.  Have fun, but stay on task. Santa is watching...
