Turning Every Kid Into a Reader Webquest!

Introduction

 

This webquest will help you find a passion for reading! Through this journey you will work to set personal goals for yourself, determine what type of reader you are, and gather books that you are interested in reading. Powerful readers develop a positive mindset about their reading ability. By completing this webquest, you will develop the skills and awareness you need to become a skilled and successful reader! 

 

Essential Question: How can you develop a growth mindset about reading?

Task

Task 1: Investigate an author’s website and share information about that author with other students in the class.

Task 2: Take a reading interest survey to find books of interest. 

Task 3: Set up a book adventure account.

Task 4: Make a list of 5 books or series you are interested in reading. 

Final Product: All information should be recorded in your reader's notebook in your Unit 1 section. 

Process

Step One:

  • Choose one of the authors below to investigate. Find their official website by doing a google search or clicking on the hyperlink. Answer the authors study questions in your reader’s notebook. Be ready to share what you have learned with your peers. Make sure you record the question and answer in your reader's notebook.

  • What is the author’s cultural and personal background?
  • Why did the author become a writer?
  • How many books has the author written?
  • What is their most recent publication?
  • What was the first book they wrote?
  • What genre does the author write?
  • What type of readers would enjoy this author?
  • Facts about the writer
  • Something cool about their website

 

 

Step 2: Find 3 or 4 other students who investigated DIFFERENT authors. Share information you learned with your group. Listen for books you are interested in reading and record notes from our discussion.

Step 3: Take a reading interest survey to identify genres and authors who might be of interest to you. Click on the hyperlink or the link below and then record the genres, authors, and titles, recommended to you based on your interest.

Step 4: Set up a book adventure account. When you setup an account,  join one of Mrs. Churila’s classes. You will need to search by her last name and the class title.

              Tip: Make sure to write down your username and login information in your reader’s notebook.

Step 5: Make a list of 5 books or series you are interested in reading. Record this in your reader’s notebook.

 

Final Product: All information should be recorded in your reader's notebook in your Unit 1 section. Look at the Evaluation link for specific requirements.  

Evaluation

You will be expected to take notes in your reader's notebook for each task you complete. The notes in our reader's notebook will be assessed as an organization grade.

Your reader's notebook must include the following:

  • Task 1-Author's Study
    • Name of the author you investiated
    • Author study questions and answers
  • Task 2- Reading Interest Survey
    • List of at least 5 recommended Books
  • Task 3- Book Adventure
    • Book adventure login information
  • Task 4- List of Books
    • At least 5 books or series you are interested in reading.

You will be assessed out of 8. Refer to the rubric below for acheivement levels.

3-4
  • Notes demonstrated some organizational strategies.
  • You included some the required information.
5-6
  • Notes demonstrated good organizational strategies.
  • You included all the required information.
7-8
  • Notes demonstrated exceptional organizational strategies.
  • You included more than the required information.

Now that you have completed the webquest, you are ready to get your reading on! Now say to yourself..."reading is important, reading is important, reading is important." This year you will be expected to read everyday and improve your abilities. You are ready to move on to setting personal goals to imrpove your reading stamina and skills. Remember, it doesn't matter where you start, just how far you are able to go. Believe in yourself! You're gonna kill it this year reading!
