Introduction

Welcome to 1840's Hannibal, Missouri!

Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain) was born in Florida, Missouri on November 30, 1835, and was the sixth child born in his family. In 1839 the Twain family moved to their Hill Street home, now the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum with its famous whitewashed fence, in the busy port city of Hannibal, Missouri. Situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, it became a model for the fictitious town of St. Petersburg in the novels Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer.

When Twain’s father died in 1847, the family did not have any money, so eleven year old Samuel left school in 5th grade and got his first of many jobs working with various newspapers and magazines. He also started writing.

Now, it's your turn to show off what you know about this time period, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and newspaper-style writing. You'll write articles using historical events you research, as well as a few stories based on Tom Sawyer. Don't forget - a picture is worth 1000 words, so you'll need some graphics to go in your newspaper! Check out the process page for more details.
