Third Grade Graphs

Introduction

Welcome students! You are about to learn about graphs! We will be learning about a bar graph, like our lunch count! We will also be learning about picture graphs (or pictographs) which we used for our Mitten Drive in the hallway. The third graph will be a line plot, which is a new one for us, and it will require you to measure items in the classroom to the nearest quarter inch. All three graphs are a great way to show data and are tools that you will use over and over again!

Task

In order to make a graph, you first have to collect data. You will be making a survey that you will use to collect data from your classmates. You will then use this data to make a bar graph and a picture graph. To make a line plot, you will collect data by measuring items in your classroom. All of these graphs are great ways to display the data you collect and they make it easy to compare the information. There are videos for you to learn how to make these graphs, games for practice, and quizzes so you can show your understanding. Let's get busy!

Process

Day 1 - BAR GRAPH

Step 1

Watch Tally Charts and Bar Graphs and then take both the easy and hard quiz. Show your teacher your results.

Step 2

Watch Bar Graphs and then Test Yourself. Show your teacher your results.

Step 3

Use your Survey Worksheet to make your own survey. Your teacher must approve it before you begin surveying your classmates. Do not turn in your survey, you will need it to make your bar graph and again tomorrow for a picture graph.

Step 4

Use the data from your survey to create a bar graph. Use your Bar Graph Worksheet and a ruler to do this. Your bar graph must have a title, x-axis label, y-axis label, categories, scale, and bars showing your data. If you have forgotten what a bar graph looks like, watch the videos again. Turn your graph in when you are done, but keep your survey for tomorrow.

Day 2 - PICTOGRAPH

Step 1

Watch Pictographs and then take both the easy and hard quiz. Show your teacher your results.

Step 2

Watch the Step by Step Pictographs and then Test Yourself. Show your teacher your results.

Step 3

Practice making a bar graph and pictograph here.

Step 4

Use your data from your survey to make a pictograph. Use your Picture Graph Worksheet to do this. Your picture graph must have categories, totals, a title, and a key. When your are done, turn in your graph and your survey.

Day 3 - LINE PLOT

Step 1

Watch the Step by Step Line Plots and then Test Yourself. Show your teacher your results.

Step 2

Play this game to practice making a bar graph and a line plot.

Step 3

Before you make a line plot, you have to first measure items that your teacher will give you. You will also need a ruler and your Recording Worksheet.

Step 4

Use the measurements to complete your Line Plot Worksheet. Your line plot must have a title and x's plotting your measurements. When you are done, turn in your recording worksheet and your line plot.

Day 4 - CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING

Step 1 - Bar Graph

Go to this website and take the Bar Graphs Quiz. Show your teacher your score when you have completed all 12 questions.

Step 2 - Pictograph

Go to this website and take the Pictographs Quiz. Show your teacher your score when you have completed all 12 questions.

Step 3 - Line Plot

Complete your Measuring and showing Data Worksheet and turn it in.

Conclusion

You have successfully collected data using a survey you created and by using tally marks to keep track of your totals. You then displayed this data with a bar graph and a picture graph. You also collected data by measuring items with a ruler to the nearest quarter inch and you displayed that data in a line plot! You practiced by playing fun games and proved you knew what you were doing by taking quizzes. As you go through school, you will be asked again to make graphs so make sure you remember what you learned through this webquest. Great work!

The best way for students to be successful with this webquest is by going over what they will need to do each day with the class. Students can work through this independenly, but going over each day's steps with them is helpful. If you aren't able to complete all of the assignments in 4 days, the steps can easily be broken up into more days. Some students may need more help and working with a partner is a great way for them to have extra support. Smaller groups are also a great way to provide students with extra support so working through this webquest in centers is a great idea. I hope you and your students find this webquest to be helpful!
