During this unit students will investigate the difference between one type of technology from past to present. Students will then produce a historical narrative using powerpoint, video, animation or digital text to explain the change in a particular type of technology over the past 50 years.

Task

Students during this unit will be required to:

1. Choose a type of technology from the list provided

2. Think critically: create six questions: who, what, where, when, why

3. Compare the difference through creating a Venn Diagram on the difference of the object from past to present

4. Answer of questions using the information sources, searching the internet and through interviewing adults

5. Develop a 'digital' narrative using: word, powerpoint, animation, video or a combination

6. Peer assessment: Recieve feedback from peers

7. Use peer feedback to revise presentation

Choose one object from either telephone, radio or television

Open a Word document and complete process in the word document to begin with.

Process

Task 1. Critical thinking

• Use these question starters to develop questions about your object: - what, when, where, who, how, why?

Ask your teacher to check the questions.

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

6.

Task 2. Comparing objects

• Use the Venn diagram to compare and contrast what is the same and what is different (e.g. features, materials and functions) about your chosen object from the past to present.

Task 3. Answering questions

Find answers to your questions by using the information sources provided by your teacher, searching the internet and interviewing adults about the object in the past and the present, be sure to include at least one image of your object in the past and present.

 Question

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

6.

 Answer

 Object in the Past

 Object in the Present

Task 4. Developing a 'digital' narrative

Plan a digital presentation

Your presentation will:

• tell about the object from the past and the present with similar features, materials and functions

• compares and contrast the difference from the past and the present (design, function, impact on daily life)

• explain how the technology in the object has changed over time

• explain changes in how the objects are used in the past and the present.

Rehearse the presentation

Watch a classmates presentation. Use these questions to give feedback. Be sure to give your classmate two good points about their presentation and one point to improve upon. Use a star to show what they did well and a moon on what they may need to improve upon.

Presenter: .....................................................................................................

Did the presenter:

• choose an object from the list?

• explain which one was older and why?

• explain the differences in object from past to present?

• give reasons for differences e.g. functions, materials ?

• explain how the technology of the object has changed over time?

• explain changes in how the technology  in the objects are used in the past and the present?

Evaluation

 Use feedback and present

• Use the feedback provided by a classmate to improve your presentation.

• Present  digital  presentation using information from your research.

You may choose your own way of using your  findings to support your presentation.

You might:

- display the original objects and use them to show your information in the presentation

- provide support information using written, graphic or digital technologies.

Some examples of programs you might want to use:

- Powerpoint

- Word document

- Image gallery with text or audio

- Video

- iMovie

- Movie Maker

- Animation:

Conclusion

After completing this WebQuest you now have a better idea of how technology has advanced over the years.

You now know what a television, telephone and radio looked like and how it worked years ago.

Now when you see your television, telephone or radio at home or at school, you will think about where they came from, who invented them and how they have advanced over the years.
