Introduction

Welcome to Webquest!  In this section on internet tools we will use Webquest to provide the information to you, but the featured topic will be podcasts.  After completing this page, please review the Teacher's page.  

You may be asking what is Webquest?

Webquest is a scaffolded learning structure that uses links from the World-Wide Web to engage students in the "quest" of knowledge around a particular task.  The purpose it to gain knowledge and  increase they would not be able to accomplish on their own.  The task is first demonstrated by the faculty member, class, group and then the individual.  It is a great process to engage students without embarassing them for not understanding the presented content.  It encourages collaboration, teamwork and self-awareness. The understand of that topic through collaboration, sharing and individual awareness.  Although we will be discussing podcasts, many of  the theories and concepts mentioned below are used during this process, so they are important to know.  It may be helpful to start with the Teacher's page before venturing into the other tabs.  

Instructional Scaffolding?

Scaffolding is temporary support systems instructors put in place to support learners through a new task that article referenced a scaffold used to provide support for construction workers as an analogy.

What Is Metacognition?

Metacognition is the ability to use prior knowledge to create a strategy for learning tasks, problem-solve, reflect, evaluate and make modifications when necessary. Self-assessment is a large part of metacognition.

What is constructivism?

Constructivism is a theory that takes a look at how people learn. It suggests that people construct their own knowledge of the world using experiences to help enhance their understanding.  "In any case, we are active creators of our own knowledge. To do this, we must ask questions, explore, and assess what we know." (Class to Classroom, 2004)

Task

The objective of this Webquest activity is to:

  • Learn about podcasts
  • What are the resources available to create a podcast
  • How to create a podcast

Process

    Steps to assist in accomplishing the tasks are:

    1. Learn the theories mentioned by discussing in a group and then pairing up to do teach back sessions
    2. Explore the sites provided to find out more about podcasts
    3. Use resources to define podcast in your own words
    4. Discuss the definition of podcast with a classmate
    5. Explore why podcasts are important educational resources
    6. Examine resources to determine how to produce a podcast
    7. Locate resources to record a podcast 

    Evaluation

    Describes to the learners how their performance will be evaluated. The evaluation should be fair, clear, consistent, and specific to the tasks.

    You will be evaluated on reviewing all of the resources.  Yor will be reponsible for adding at least 5 new websites that relate to the topic.

    Conclusion

    You have learned a lot about a new concept or how to create something that you have not created before.   Take some time to reflect on what you have learned and the results.
