Introduction
In the summer of 2016, the summer Olympics are going to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Olympics allows countries from all over the world to send their best athletes in respective sports to represent their country at the chance to win gold, silver or bronze medals. Your job is to inform yourself, as well as others about the history of the Olympics dating back to ancient times to preset day. You will also become part of the Olympic committee and come up with a proposal as to why your city should be a future host site for the summer Olympics.
Task
Below are two tasks to be completed. You make work in partners.
Task #1: Find the answers to the questions below. Write them down or type them up so you can hand in the assignment. You will share your 6 fun facts with the class.
- Where were the first Olympics held, what year, and what was the criteria in order to be involved?
- Were women allowed to participate? Why or why not?
- What sports were played in the first Olympics? Explain 3.
- What 3 countries have won the most medals in the Summer Olympics?
- How many countries compete in the summer Olympics?
- Who is the most decorated Olympian in the summer games?
- Who was the first athlete to represent the United States in the Olympics? What sport did they participate in?
- Where were the last 3 Summer Olympics held and where is the next one being held after Rio de Janeiro?
- Name 5 summer Olympic games
- How often are the Olympics held? What is this called?
- What do the 5 Olympic rings represent?
- Give me 3 fun facts about the summer and winter Olympics. 3 each
Task #2: Select a city to host the summer Olympics. Make a proposal to the Olympic committee as to why your selected city would be a good host for the summer Olympics. When making your proposal, you must include:
- Location
- What sports will be played
- Venues used for each sport
- What makes your location appealing? For example, surrounding area, history of the location. Etc. Think of reasons why you want to visit that city other than because it is hosting the Olympics
Be thoughtful and creative with your answers. You can chose an existing city or make up one. You must make a poster, PowerPoint or Prezi to present this to to the class.
Process
As individuals or in partners, answer the questions and put together a presentation (poster, PowerPoint, Prezi) of your proposal. This will be due on 11/30, so you have a week to get this done. For each day that it is late, 5 points will be taken off of your grade for the assignment
