STJ Stock Market Challenge

Introduction

Congratulatulations! You and your friend both received $1000 for your birthdays. Its your lucky day! Good thing you are both smart, becuse you have deceided to invest your birthday money into the Stock Market together. You will be investing a total of $2000.

Your team will research different investment options and make decisions on where to invest your money. Over the next 10 weeks, your goal is to make as much money as you possibly can. Lets see who can make the most in the class! 

Task

Your task will include learning how to read stock quotes, research and buy stocks, track the performance of your stocks, and how to evaluate your investment portfolio. At the conclusion of this project, you will be submitting a portfolio spreadsheet. (This can be created in Google Sheets) You will also be presenting a powerpoint presentation to the class that will sumarize the performance of your portfolio and what you learned from this Stock Market Challenge experience. 

Process

Every Wednesday for the next 10 weeks, you will have time to work on your investments. Below is the process you should follow:

STEP 1:

First ask yourself these questions:

1. What is happening in the news now that might tell us what companies are doing well and which ones are not?

2. What parts of the economy are thriving and what is suffering?

STEP 2:

RESEARCH- Your team should do research on company's that interest you and that will make you profit.

- Keep notes on the companies

- Document the resons why you picked each company

- Document the company symbol

- Document how many shares you are able to purchase and at what price 

STEP 3:

Create a spreadsheet in Google Sheets:

Your team will need to keep a weekly spreadsheet that will include the following:

- Company Name

- Company Symbol

- Price per share

- Number of shares purchased or held

- Total worth of shares per company 

- Profit or Loss from day of purchase to present day

- Percent Change from day of purchase to present day

- Total Portfolio Worth (Weekly)

- Total Portfolio profit or loss (Weekly)

- Total Portfolio percentage change (Weekly)

STEP 4:

Your team will present your Investment Portfolio and how it performed during your 10 weeks to the class. Your powerpoint presentation should include:

- Company Information

- Line Graph for each company (Weekly profit or loss)

- Line graph with total portfolio (profit or loss)

- Conclusion

          - Profit/ Loss

          - Your Experiences (likes or dislikes)

          - Challenges as a group for the project

          - Three things you learned about investing
