Introduction
What is the importance of being able to identify places on the map such as cities, states, countries, continents and landmarks?
Maps are very important, especially when it comes to social studies geometry. Being able to read the earth as well as a map and see where people have been and are going is essential to the learning process. This WebQuest will include lessons for the third grade on maps, the continents, and the familiar places that students can associate themselves with. All while learning how to use and read a map.
Task
Day 1:
Go to http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/World_Continents.htm and then click on "Level L, Tutorial." to find out the names of the continents.
When you are done click on the Level 2 Intermediate and match the continents with the correct name.
When finished Write on a piece of paper describing where the continents are on the map and which ones are closest to the continent we live on.
Day 2:
Visit https://www.nps.gov/webrangers/activities/readingmap/?id=21 and watch the video on how to read a map.
Then visit http http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/education/sysm/landscapes/highlands_islands/maps… to be able to find land marks on a map.
On a blank piece of paper, draw a map of your home with a campus and a grid. Color each room of the house and then use a key showing which rooms the colors represent.
Day three:
http://pbskids.org/buster/games/coasttocoast/ctcgame.html, visit this website and play the game.
When finished with that, visit http://freerice.com/#/identify-countries-map/887 and play the country game.
Look of vocabulary words : Longitude, latitude, map key, Landmark, country, compass, continent and write down the definition beside it.
Day 4:
Visit http://mrnussbaum.com/world-landmarks/ to look at all the land marks.
On a piece of paper right down all the land marks that you recognize while also writing down what country or continent they are in. Click on each land mark on the page and read the description.
On a piece of paper summarize what you have found about the landmarks that you did not know before.
Day five:
visit http://lizardpoint.com/geography/ and take the quiz.
When finished visit http://www.uen.org/3-6interactives/social_studies.shtml again and review the ancient civilizations.
Write a paragraph 3 to 5 sentences long explaining why it is important to know how to read a map, why it is important to know where countries and continents are and who lives there?
Aids will be helping students who do not understand or need a little extra help along with myself. Students who have severe reading and writing problems can get little worksheets from me for the effort and give me oral paragraphs on what they have learned.
Process
Day one:
Students will become familiar with the continents or be refreshed on them and do an assignment to help them retain the information.
Day two:
Students will then become familiar with reading the map and understanding what landmarks are and becoming familiar with where the continents are on the map. In creating their own map they will use their thinking skills to better help them understand.
Day three:
They will go one step further and begin to learn the countries. Then play geography games that test the skills they have learned over the last two days as a refresher.
Day four:
They will become more aware of where these places are by looking at the landmarks like the Eifel tower and the Great Wall of China to better help them understand where the continents and countries are located. They will then learn about culture by writing down what they have learning about the land marks and the people who are close to them.
Day five:
By now they should be able answer the question once looking back at all the work. They will take a geography quiz and then write what they have learned about maps, the continents and countries, and also the culture that is with it.
Evaluation
scale of 1 to 4.
1 being the lowest and 4 is the highest.
1: The students did not understand or do the assignments like they were asked. Did not identify the continents even after they had help if they had trouble initially understanding.
2:
They grasped the concept but still failed at doing the written assignments even after the aids and teacher helped.
3:
Grasped the concept and succeeded in the assignments but did not fully understand or answer the question at the beginning. Still did not grasp some concept of the lesson.
4:
Completely understood the tasks at hand and succeeded at all the games and quizes. They were successful in all of their written and drawing assignments and completely mastered and answered the question at the end of the lesson.
Conclusion
Congratulations on finishing the MapQuest for third grade on geography. Depending on your score depends on how hard you worked and how much you learned.
The continents and countries along with maps and landmarks are a very important part of social studies and are the beginning stages of the journey into geography.
Knowing where we come from and knowing where we live along with who our neighbors are is a vital piece of information that needs to be taught successfully as soon as possible.
Give yourself a round of applause!
