Scientific Notation

Introduction

This webquest was created so students will be able to compute and explore numbers written in scientific notation and in the real world.

Go to the task.

Task

You will be taking part in a webquest involving the Powers of Ten and Scientific Notation. Go to each concept's page and follow the steps. Remember to record everything on your activity sheet. Have fun!

Go to the Process.

Process

Complete each activity in order. Do not skip around.

Activity #1:  Go to the "Secret Worlds: The Universe Within" website. Watch the Powers of Ten slideshow. When it is finished, it will give you the option to increase or decrease the powers of ten. When you have completed Activity #6, go to the Conclusion.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have explored positive and negative exponents and about scientific notation. You did independent, online research to gather scientific facts. You expressed very large and very small numbers from these scientific facts in scientific notation.

Extention: Go to the "Universcale" website. Watch the Intro video. Along the bottom of the screen, click on different measurements and explore the different things at each measurement. Choose your three favorites and record them on your activity sheet.
