Samuels Health fad Assignment

Introduction

 Fad Diets:

Paleo Diet

The paleo diet is all about people eating like the early man would, the sort of things you might eat while on this diet are meats, vegetables, and fish. The foods that it restricts you from is cereal products and processed foods.

Detox Diet

The detox diet is a very strict diet, however it has very fast effect. The diet doesn't allow grains, alcohol, milk, or sugar so you are basically stuck with drinking water and eating dry white bread.

Plastic purge  The plastic purge was a health fad back in the 1990's. The whole idea to it was you got rid of using plastic and it would stop you for getting diseases, the only problem was that this didn't work. The idea first came around when scientists discovered that plastic had a very toxic chemical in it.
Master cleanse Diet

Master Cleanse consists of a strict daily intake consisting of a morning salt water flush, 6 to 12  glasses of the specially designed 'Master Cleanse lemonade', and a nightly laxative tea which flushes all of the left over toxins out.

Israli army Diet

The Israeli Army diet was a fad diet that was popular in the 1970s. It was promoted as being based on the diet used by the Israel Defense Forces for new recruits but had no connection whatsoever with the Israeli Army.

Low carbohydrate  Diet

A low-carb diet limits carbohydrates such as those found in grains, starchy vegetables and fruit. This diet emphasises foods that are high in protein and fat. Each type of low carbs diet has different restrictions on the types and amounts of carbohydrates you can eat.

Task

Health Fad answers:

Paleo Diet:

The Paleo Diet has been advertised on television, billboards, cook books  and many websites, I believe this sort of advertising is useful to the product, because most people watch television at sometime of day and even while I was reseaching different health fads this diet was appearing as an advert. Some of the down falls the paleo diet advertising is the people that make the ads need to use audience aging, for example if you were to put an advert about the paleo diet in a children's game. If I where have to choose 3 of these fads to try, I would personally do the paleo diet, the plastic purge and the low carbs diet. The other health fads I would completely discount would be the master cleanse, the Israeli army diet and the detox diet. The negative side effect these diets could give you are starvation, illness and sometimes if you are on one for too long you could possibly die.

The Plastic Purge:

The Plastic Purge has been marketed online, it has also been written as a book called 'Plastic Purge: how to use less plastic, eat better, keep toxins out and help save the turtle'. This lifestyle is not completely life changing, but it makes people think about how they buy and store their food. The good thing about advertising in a book and online is you can get both types of readers, some people don't want to go to their local bookstore. They  think it's a waste of time when you can just get on the internet in the comfort of your on home. The bad thing is when advertising a product you don't really want to have to advertise for the book, so people can buy the book and read about your product. (In fact your basically paying for two adverts). To tell the truth I believe that this health fad is not dangerous at all it is just letting people be aware about the way they use plastic.

Low Carbohydrate Diet:

The low carbs diet is almost identical to the paleo diet, by the way it is marketed and advertised. There is only thing that the paleo diet doesn't have in its adverts and the low carbs diet does is that it states facts and figures to promote it. The only thing that puts some people off could be that, really not everyone cares about facts, quotes or boring pie charts the thing that everyone wants to know is how fast do I loose weight and how cost effective it is. Some of the downsides toward the low carb diet is that most people, (if they are exercising regularly), would not want to cut out most of their carbs, because you would loose lots of energy. Carbohydrates are the only thing in your body that can give you substantial energy over a long period of time.

Health Fad Chart:

Name of Fad:

Vitamin Drip.

People that have done the Fad:

Kelly Osbourn, Chrissy Teigen, Ryan Phillipe, Rhianna and Rita Ora.

How long did they do the Fad for:                                                              Kelly went on the vitamin drip for 6 and a half months, Chrissy tried it for only 3 weeks because her doctor told her that she was loosing way to much weight, to fast.
Reason for going on health fad:                                                To be honest with you if a celebrity sees something anywhere that might get them fame, they try, so the celebritys that tried this health fad basically wanted to show that doing something stupid will give you fame.
What were the bad     symptom:

The bad symptoms that Ryan and Chrissy face was weight loss sickness and lack of  energy. The odd thing is Kelly on the other hand went on it for far long than any of the celebrities that tried it and sustained no sign of bad symptons or injury at all.

Did the health fad do what it claimed to do:

Well this a very hard question to answer, because Kelly was on this health fad for 6 months as I said before and had amazing results. Although on the other hand Ryan and Chrissy had no luck on it and where told if they did it for any longer they could die.

Evaluation

Mini Report:

The 2 types of health fads mentioned in Dr Phils TV Program are sun addicts and dieting pills (Fentermine).

Sun Addicts:

If shown to too much sun without sunscreen (preferable SPF 15+) you can get premature aging, wrinkling, can definitely cause some skin cancers and inhibits the immune system from functioning correctly. The reason most people use tanning beds and stay out in the sun all day is because they think that being more tanned will make you either more popular or an all round better person.

Dieting Pills (fentermine):

Fentermine is an approved drug that is sold over the counter in America and Australia the thing with this dieting pill is the it has fatal side effects, for example: dizziness, not being able to sleep, angry snaps and depression. The sort of people that start to use these pills is because they are over weight and not able to do the things they used to love.

Conclusion

Famous Fads:

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow was on the macrobiotic diet for 11 years, but was recently diagnosed with osteopenia, an illness that can lead to the serious bone disease called osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a disease that many elderly people are diagnosed with. It is pretty rare for a younger person (37 year old) to receive this disease. This proves that the macrobiotic diet is definitely not a good weoght watcher
