Romeo & Juliet - A Modernization Project

Introduction

We have now come to the end of Romeo and Juliet. Throughout the last several weeks we have discussed, re-enacted, reflected and related to this play about the tragic events that befell the Capulet and Montague families and now it is time to take the play into you’re your own hands and your own time.  What would Romeo and Juliet be like if it happened today? What aspects of the story would be different? What would be the same?

In groups of four you will first be asked to draw at random for one of the following scenes:

  • Act I, Scene I:  Capulets and Montagues quarrel in the streets, Romeo pines for Rosaline
  • Act I, Scene V: Capulet’s party; Romeo and Juliet meet
  • Act II, Scene II:  The balcony scene (if you choose this scene, you will have to switch actors half way through)
  • Act III, Scene I:  Mercutio, Tybalt, and Romeo fight
  • Act III, Scene III: Friar Laurence makes a plan
  • Act III, Scene V:  Juliet is informed she will be marrying Paris
  • Act V, Scene I: Romeo goes to the apothecary
  • Act V, Scene III:  Death and resolution

You may trade with another group if you so choose.  You will be expected to re-read and become experts on this scene.

Task

In groups of four you will create a modern, re-written script of your group's scene, along with an introduction.  First, you must choose roles of expertise.  Each role will be provided with questions to respond to and resources to use.  The expertise of these roles will be essential to the quality completion of your group's introduction and script.

Roles:

Feud Specialist

Linguist

Psychologist

Social Class Expert
