Introduction

You are a crew member of an ocean-going sea vessel. The sea is calm on a warm spring day and the afternoon is going well. You look out at the ocean from your view on the deck and are stunned to find a wave probably almost 100 ft. high heading straight for you. Within seconds, the huge wave slams into your ship, nearly flipping the boat and sending people and supplies flying. After the wave has passed over your ship, the ocean is calm again and it would seem as if nothing happened- except for the extreme damage done to your now sinking ship. In this webquest, you will learn more about these strange and deadly waves, known as ‘rogue waves’, their causes and why until recently they were thought of as myths.

USE AN APPROPRIATE SCALE AND ADD A VESSEL TO RECEIVE EXTRA POINTS. |

Divide your group into three separate roles. One of you should be the writer, one should find graphics and captions and one should be in charge of the poster art and design. Roles may change as deemed necessary by the group. All members must do his/her part in order to complete the activity and receive full credit.

Writer:
Your final task is to write a 1-2 page paper about rogue waves. Be sure to include information about the Draupner Wave.
- Use the internet to find information about rogue waves. Remember to cite your sources in a bibliography.
- You will be graded on the content accuracy of your paper, bibliography, grammar, punctuation, spelling and paraphrasing. Do not plagiarize. That means, NO- you cannot simply copy and paste information from a website or any other source.
Picture Finder:
Your job is to find a variety of interesting pictures and graphics about rogue waves and include them on the final persuasive poster.
- All pictures should include 1-2 sentence captions and credit to the source they were taken from.
- You will be graded on your captions, the amount of graphics and their relevance to rogue waves.
Artist:
Your task is to create a neat, attractive poster on which the writer’s report and the picture finder’s graphics will be displayed.
- Include a title that can be seen from at least 10 feet away and color the poster.
- You will be graded on neatness, attractiveness and effort.

- After each group member is finished with their specific roles, reunite, share any interesting facts you found and start on your poster. You should attach the paper and graphics in an attractive way that makes them stand out and provide any finishing touches you may need.
- Collaboratively come up with a 1 minute presentation to the class about rogue waves and present it along with your poster.

Conclusion
You have learned a plethora of information about rogue waves. Now, we will begin reading "Rogue Wave" on page 3 in your Collections textbook. We will discuss plot elements, making inferences, conflict types and the affect conflict has on a story's plot. Be ready to verabally answer questions on page 16. You need to be able to cite evidence from the text to support your responses.
