Introduction
How can you use illustrations and words to help you better understand stories?
Illustrations can be very helpful in giving us
information about stories that may not be mentioned. When
you pay attention to what you read, you might notice
details about the plot, characters, or setting you might not
notice otherwise. By learning to look at the illustrations
and pay attention to the words, you can get brand
new information from stories that you might not have
noticed before!
Task
We are going to read a story called "Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain".
Before we start reading, let's all fold a piece of paper into three columns.
Now, label the first column "Characters", the second column "Plot", and the third
column "Setting".
As we read the story, be sure that you pay attention to the details of what you are
reading. Whenever you notice things about the characters, plot, or setting that stand
out in the text, be sure to write it down.
Make sure that you are also paying attention to the illustrations. The illustrations may
add extra information you would not have learned just by reading, such as details
about the character's appearance, specifics of the setting, or some plot details.
Process
Remember as you read to look for some of these things:
- details about WHERE the story is taking place
- details about the main character(S)
- details in the pictures about what is happening or what will happen
Read and listen carefully to make sure that you catch every detail that you can!
Evaluation
You will not be graded on the nature of your answers, but on the fact that you provide
relevant answers so be sure to find as many details as you can to help you to understand the
story better!
You must find at least five (5) details for each column to get full credit
After reading, we will discuss as a group the details we all found helpful
