Race Issues During the Roaring 20’s

Introduction

This WebQuest asks students to explore the relevence of race during the era of the 1920's.  During this period of time in the United States, there was a growing movement on both sides of the race issue.  There were organizations who wanted the races to be equal and thus struggled to convey that message through various legal means in the public relam.  There were also organizations of extremists on both side of the race issue that wanted to keep segregation as the status quo of this country.

INTRODUCTION

Organizations such as the United Negro Improvement Association and the Ku Klux Klan did everything in their power to keep the races separate and were equally against integration and assimilation.  Organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Anti-Defamation League all worked towards ending segregation and promoting equality among all races.  Meanwhile, the federal government made things infinitely complicated through the Palmer Raids intended to capture, arrest and deport radical leftists as well as reduce the quota of "undesireable" immigrants from Eastern Europe, Southern Europe, Africa, India, Arabia and East Asia.  Students will explore the founding logic behind these organizations as well as the validity of their viewpoints.

Task

TASK

You and your group will study various aspects of the time period of the 1920's to examine the racial tensions and status quo that existed.  You will work together to complete a review of background information and reaction to the views expressed by each of the radical organizations that struggled to either integrate or segregate.  Your final product will be to create a report on not only the organizations and their views, but also on the kewy leaders of each group.  This information will reflect the status of America prior to World War II, the war responsible for leading to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's.

Process

PROCESS

The following is a brief overview of the steps you will need to take to complete this webquest.  Click the links for each listed organization to explore basic information for each of them.  As part of your assignment you will also use your own sources to look into the backgrounds of the leaders for each of these movements.

1.  You will be assigned a group consisting of four people.  Once in your groups you will examine all of the included photos, videos and organization summaries provided in the WebQuest.  For the first two days students will be conducting additional research into the various organizations that played a key role in the social movements of the 1920’s, while paying attention to the leaders of these movements in particular.

2.  After you complete your research, share findings with the rest of your group.  Students will write an individual response to each of the provided materials sharing their opinion of the validity of the opposing views for each of the key organizations included.

3.  The next three days will be spent writing and editing their information.  As a group, the students will summarize their opinions of the main opposing viewpoints and list which media worked best to convey these.

4.  Students will type their summaries as groups and conclude the effectiveness of the propaganda with regard to how successful each of these key organizations eventually became.  This will show students how various polarizing movements can have such a drastic effect on the history of this country.
