Introduction
In this webquest, you will learn how to pronunciate and read r-contolled vowels. R-controlled vowels are vowels that are followed by the letter r, and make a special sound. Some example words are: /ar/ sound in car, /âr/ sound in bear, /îr/ sound in pier, /ir/ sound in spider, /or/ sound in author, and /er/ sound in butter.
In this lesson we will focus on -ar and -er controlled vowels and do different activities with each. You will be able to know how to read and recognize both conrtolled vowels by the end of this lesson. Some questions that we will answer are as follows:
What does the -ar sound make?
What does the -er sound make?
What are some -ar words?
What are some -er words?
Do r-controlled vowels rhyme with other r-controlled vowels?
What kind of combinations can we make with r-controlled vowles?
Does having the letter -r follow the vowel change the way a word is spoken?
What are short r-controlled words?
What are long r-controlled words?
Task
Part I. First, I want you guys to watch this video to help you better understand what /ar/ r-contolled vowels are. Then answer the questions based off the video:
Question 1). List 5 different words that were in the video that have the -ar sound.
Question 2). Does the -ar sound make a "pirate" arrrr sound? True or false?
Part II. Next, watch this video and then answer these question on /er/ r-controlled vowels:
Question 3). Who is the boss?
Question 4). List the 2 different words that were in this video that have -er sound.
Question 5). Can you think of any other words that were not in this video that have the -er sound too? If yes, then list at least two.
Part III. With a partner/friend, take turns matching each of the words with a word that rhymes with it.
