The Progressive Era (1890-1920)

Introduction

This webquest will help you to better understand that when there is conflict between or  within societies, change is usually the end result.  However, when change occurs over time, there is continuity (continuous) to the basic structure of that society.  This standard will measure your knowledge of Progressive reforms and African American's struggle for equal rights.  Reformers during this period of progress in areas like business and industry were inspired to make important improvements in America's political and social environment. The reformers would become known as Progressives and these reforms strengthened American democracy in ways that still affect us today. At the same time America was being reformed, African Americans found themselves left out of reform efforts when southern whites denied basic rights to black citizens.

A few of the essential questions that will be answered during this webquest are as follows:

1.  What role did the muckrakers play in the reforms of the Progressive Era?

2.  What were the consequences of Jim Crow laws and Plessy v. Ferguson?

3.  How did the publishing of Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle effect the operations of food industries in the United States?

4.  What was the impact of Jane Addams and Ida Tarbell?
