Introduction

Welcome! In this WebQuest you will be demonstrating your understanding of stanzas and other poetic elements. This assignment will require you to pick a poem to analyze and then complete a project to accompany your analysis.

The standards this WebQuest will focus on are...

  1. Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

  2. Explain major differences between poems, drama, and prose, and refer to the structural elements of poems (e.g., verse, rhythm, meter) and drama (e.g., casts of characters, settings, descriptions, dialogue, stage directions) when writing or speaking about a text.

Task

In this WebQuest you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of poetic elements. You will also be required to show your knowledge about at least four of the elements we have reviewed so far (stanzas will be required for this assignment). For a review of these please see the list below.

Process

1. Choose a poem to analyze from those below. 

2. Read the poem a few times to begin your thinking process. Feel free to listen to the aidio recording of the poem to. 

3. Next begin to analyze your poem. You can choose either of the following ways to demonstrate your analysis of the poem. 

  • Use mindmup to create a web of your thinking (upload your final document to Google Classroom)

  • Create a Google Presentation to demonstrate your thinking (upload your final document to Google Classroom)

  • Draw a visual of your poem, upload it to Google Presentation, and then use Screencastify to make the analysis. (upload your final document to Google Classroom)

  • Using poster board and coloring supplies print your poem and then add color and drawings to highlight and label the poem. Type, handwrite, or complete a Screencastify to review your thoughts about the poem you selected.

Evaluation

Your presentation of the analysis of the poem will need to require the following:

  • your name

  • the title of the poem you selected

  • address the number of stanzas and stanza breaks

  • you must address at least four poetric elements (imagery, rhyme sceme, stanzas, alliteration, similies, metaphors, hyerbole, personification) and use the text to support your thinking.

          Ex: "the dangerous dragon danced on the floor"
                 -This line shows alliteration with the /d/ sound from
                 dangerous, 
    dancing, and dragon.

  • a 5 sentence description of what you liked or disliked about the poem (your answer needs to be supported)

I hope you enjoyed your WebQuest. Remember all digital projects needed to be uploaded to Google Classroom. I hope this project inspired you to continue to read poetry. Poetry is a special piece of writing and can have many means of interpretation.
