Introduction

Why are plants important to every day life?

Grade 1 Science

I have a question. Can you help me? Why are plants so important? Let me know what you discover.

Task

Get into groups of 2 or 3
Each group will be assigned a different type of plant
 Once you are assigned a group you must find out why is your plant important or not important to the ecosystem and how it is used as a natural resource. 
As a group create an Ad to sway the class to think your plant is the most important in the ecosystem or why we should do away with your plant
The Ad will be presented to the class no longer than 2 minutes.
The Ad will be rated by your classmate.
Be sure to be creative and provide as much information as possible. 

Process

Each group will be assigned a different plantThey will be given a list to choose from:  montbretia, coca planet, common milkweed, bee balm, cutleaf coneflower, groundnuts,  Joe Pye weed, Marsh marigold, Pokeweed, purple coneflower, Jewelweed, shunk cabbage, violet, or cattail. Things to consider while during your research. Where is the plant located, how does it grow, how long does it take to grow, how is it used as a natural resource, how does it help or harm the ecosystem, should we preserve this plant or do away with it? Now that you have all of your information let's get creative.  Create a two minute Ad that tells us why we should or should not invest in to your plant.  If we should not tell us what other plant would be a better replacement.  Be sure to be creative.  Add a tone or a catchy phrase. Use pictures, costumes, or even a dance. The sky is the limit.

The webquest will allow students to explore and understand the many uses of plants in everyday life.  This webquest should be done over a period of about a week.  This will allow students enough time to find out as much information as possible about the plant and be creative as possible when creating the ad. 

STANDARDS

Standard 1.L.5: The student will demonstrate an understanding of how the structures of plants help them survive and grow in their environments.
