Pest Management in the Greenhouse

Introduction

You are working for the high school greenhouse and have found a pest on one of the benches.  Determine two methods you could use to control the pest taking into account the effectiveness of the method while ensuring personal safety of all of the students in the school.  You will need to create a PowerPoint presentation of your findings.

Task

For this assignment you will become the class expert on a common greenhouse pest. After you select an insect you would like to investigate you will use the computer to gather all pertinent information.   You will then create a presentation that you will share with the class.  The presentation can be any of the following; a PowerPoint or Prezi, infomercial, or a static display.  You may work independently or in groups of no more than 2 students.

The presentation should contain the following information about your insect:

1. Life cycle and description of each stage or instar.

2. Symptoms of infestation and damage to plant

3. Control methods to include; mechanical, chemical and biological

4. Recommendation of control method for the school greenhouse.

Process

You will either work alone or in groups of no more than 2 students.  Each individual or group will be given images of an insect or symptons of damage on a plant.  Once you identify the insect you will need to gather the following information:

  1. Description of the Insect and Life Cycle

  2. Symptoms/Signs of Damage

3.Methods used to control the insect to include:

  • Biolgical
  • Chemical
  • Mechanical

   4. Recommendation of method to use in the greenhouse.  You              also explain why you chose the method.

Once the information is collected you should determine how you would like to present the information. Please choose one of the following:

  • Static Display- Use trifolds, posterboards, etc...create a display of the information.  This should contain models or pictures and should be appealing.
  • PowerPoint or Prezi Presentation- The presentation should include a minimum of 4 visual aides and can include still photos and videos.
  • Oral Presentataion-This can either be a skit or pre-recorded. The infomercial should contain all of the information about the insect and some visual aides!
Evaluation

The presentation should cover all of the information and include visual aides.  The presentation will be worth a total of 55 pts.  You will be assessed on the content and the presentation. If you are working in a group, both members will receive the same grade.   Please refer to the following guidelines and rubrics when creating your presentation.

The grading will be as follows: Content- Total of 40 points:    1. Description of the insect to include:           *Proper Identification of the Insect-  8 pts.       *Description of the insect to include images of the stages-egg, larval/nymph,pupa and adult        - 3 pts.      2.  Symptoms/Damage to plant to include:      * Identifying characteristics of insect infestation on plant-  3 pts.      * Stage of insect that causes the damage-  3 pts.            3.  Control Methods to include examples of:      * Mechanical-3 pts.      * Chemical- 3 pts.      * Biological- Be sure to discuss what stage the control is most effective on.-3 pts.     4. Recommendation      *For each of the control methods be sure to discuss:           -Advantages and Disadvantages-6 pts
-Environmental and Human Impact- 3 pts           -Effectiveness- 3 pts      * Method Selected with rationale.  3 pts Presentation- Total of 20 points:

Conclusion

Insects are a common pest in the commercial greenhouse.  They can cause a lot of damage and loss of crop.  Becoming familiar with the signs and symptoms on the plant and the proper identification of the pest will allow you to properly treat the crop and help to minimize plant loss.

You will use this information gathered as well as the information presented by your classmates as we grow our crops in the greenhouse.  Each of you will be given a bench to manage.  It will be your job to address concerns as the appear.  You will have the option to determine the approach to treat the bench to ensure a healthy crop. Let's get growing!
