Introduction

 

In our country we notice that some industries are controlled by a relatively small number of businesses. We are going to look at oligopolies in the Bahamas. Do you know what an oligopoly is? Do you know of any industries in the Bahamas that have oligopolies? Throughout this journey you will watch videos and learn some new terms. At the end of this lesson you will know what oligopolies are and you will be able to identify them when you see them.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Task

Oligopolies exist all around us and it will be your job to discover Oligopolies in the Bahamas and the United States. You will be required to accomplish the following:

  • Identify three (3) industries in the United States that have oligopolies

  • Identify which corporations head the oligopolies

  • Identify the entities within those corporation

  • Identify one (1) industry in the Bahamas that has an oligopoly

  • Identify the corporation or corporation who control the oligopoly

  • Identify the companies that are under those corporations

  • Present a powerpoint presentation on your findings
Process

For starters all of you will be divided into groups of three.

Step 1:

Ask yourself the following question; What is a oligopoly?

Step 3:

Use the internet to find 3 industries that have oligopolies in the United States

Step 4:

After finding the three industries that have oligopolies, find one (1) major company in each industry and find at least two (2) companies controlled by the major companies.

Step 5:

Compile your findings in a chart outline the industry that has the oligopoly,  the major corporation in the industry and the companies that fall under the major corporation.

Step 6:

Now that you have understanding of oligopolies you will now find one (1) industry in the Bahamas and you will identify the major company and the smaller companies that are under the control of the major company.

INTRODUCTION

This lesson was formed out of a desire to increase the awareness of oligopolies existing within the society among the students.

This lesson requires that students research and identify oligopolies in the United States and the Bahamas. The point of the lesson is that students have the ability to identify industries that have oligopolies, the actual large companies that comprise the oligopolies and the smaller companies that fall under the larger companies.

LEARNERS

This lesson is anchored for 7th grade economics students and it can easily be adapted to 8th and 9th grade economics students as well.

Learners will need a basic understanding of economics and should be at least familiar with the term oligopoly.

CURRICULUM STANDARDS

As a result of this lesson students will be able to understand and identify the characteristics of an oligopoly and they will be able to identify oligopoly in their surrounding societies and the global society at large by reverting back to what they have learned. This lesson involves observation, categorization and critical thinking.

This lesson is important because it allows students to learn about and identify oligopolies in not only the economy of the Bahamas but also of economies in other destinations around the world.
