Obesity and Healthy Eating

Introduction

This project is to highlight the epidemic of obesity, one of Australia's growing health problems.

Australia is today ranked as one of the fattest nations in the developed world. The prevalence of obesity in Australia has more than doubled in the past 20 years.

This webquest will help Students to learn about obesity, the health issues involved, and tips to make healthy eating choices.

In this lesson, students will look at health issues that are associated with obesity and foods that contribute to it.  Students will  explore healthy snack vs unhealthy snacks and take snack-food survey to assess their own eating habits. They will also create a daily menu of healthy food choices. Through class discussion, they will explore obestiy, and the role it plays in eating unhealthy foods as well as learning new ways to eating healthier.

Task

Your task is to search the web sites provided, define and gather information and create a healthy menu.

By the end of this session you should know;

  • What obesity is
  • Health risks involved
  • Making healthier food choices.
Process

In your books, answer the following- be sure to check the evaulation page for the marking rubric

  • Students are to look up the definition and gather information on the term “Obesity”
  • List and explain 4 health risks involved using the two websites provided.
  • Students will gather snack information, healthy vs. unhealthy and make two lists (total of 20 items on each) using the internet
  • Create a one day menu including snacks

  • Be ready to show your teacher- full marks gets a silver award!

Conclusion

After completing this Webquest you should be more familiar with obesity and the risk factors associated with it. You should be able to reflect on your eating habits and compare it to the healthy sample menu you made for one day of eating.

There are many factors involved in living a healthy life like exercising, maintaining a healthy weight, and as we have learned here today eating healthy by making healthier food choices.
